We've done both trips hosted by Pacific Whale Foundation[.org]. Molokini (not an island, but the rim of a collapsed volcano) is extremely crowded. I've seen far more species of fish and ocean creatures (with no denser congregations of swimmers and floating bodies) in 4 feet of water off the shore of south Maui.
My family loved snorkeling off Lana`i. The water was extremely clear, calm and blue, though we weren't suffocated by fish (there was a decent variety). The trip in the boat was exhilirating-the view of the west coast of Maui worth the cost. The Lana`i waters have very large populations of dolphins.
I would not take either trip just to enjoy the cuisine served aboard.

Ok - heres another question. We are going in September and booked a sail with Trilogy as we read a lot of good reviews. It's an all day sail to Hulopo'e Beach, Lana'i and back. Anyone done this? It is pricey but we don't mind if it is worth it.
Thanks, NannyJan
