Maui beach condo - no AC?
 

Most all the condos on the beach we're looking at have no air conditioning and I know it hits 90 in Maui in June. Any experiences with that as we are worried about it for sure.

It's impossible to predict the need for AC in any one condo, as the orientation and sun exposures are going to be different. Many places are fine because of the tropical breezes

However, I want AC to be available and am willing to pay for it.

I'd challenge the 90 degree temperature issue. However, it can be the humidity that is challenging at 85 degrees.

I'd want A/C.

At Hale Pau Hana the bedrooms have a/c but the trade winds and the ceiling fans make it comfortable.

I agree it's hard to know without being in the condo, because a good cross breeze from trade winds can cool things significantly in the evening, as can fans in every room. Most Hawaiian condos have louvered glass windows with screens to let breezes through. Also, check to see if they have a sun visor that rolls down over the lanai and west-facing windows to keep the condo from getting too hot in the afternoon. From what I have heard, August and September are the hottest months.

It also depends on the settting of the condo. Will it be secure to leave all the doors and windows open? On vacation at the beach in summer I like to have AC. It's also handy for noise control, should that happen to be an issue.

There are many condos in Maui with AC. Why are you looking at condos without it?

Here's my perspective on the need for AC on Maui in June.

My son and his wife and ultimately 3 children lived in Kihei for about 10 years in the 90's. They rented a 3 bedroom, 2 bath very ordinary house in a very ordinary neighborhood of similar houses. It was not air conditioned and they never installed even a window air conditioner. We visited them about 7 times during that period and slept on a futon in the screened in Lanai. That was pretty comfortable, since there was a little air movement all night.

The reality is, however, that by afternoon, the summer temperature inside and outside regularly reached about 87F. That's what it was whether we were out seeing sights or running errands or just sitting there. We sweated as appropriate and enjoyed our visits. We did not suffer from heat prostration, and to some extent became acclimated to the conditions. Upon returning to our home in inland Southern California, we felt a little chilly for a couple of days.

You will be OK. Remember, Hawaii is "paradise", and as such should not require air conditioning. (But if your condo has it, go ahead and use it).

That's a geat description db, but if I'm paying good money to stay in Maui, I don't want to "be okay", nor do I want to sit around or try to sleep in a room topping 87 degrees!

have been to hawaii countless time (not Maui however)and have rarely had an AC. Trade winds cool it down but depending on the configuration of the dwelling, it could be uncomfortable in some rooms. we have always had ceiling fans and floor fans that help circulate air which helps. It is the tropics and it does get humid so be prepared....If you can find one with AC I'd stay there but if there is one with an awesome view of the ocean and no AC, I'd go for the view.....

90` in June? More likely to be "high seventies to low eighties, winds 10 to 15 miles per hour". September is our hot month.

However, changes in humidity are the hardest to adjust to, and if the unit doesn't have access to the tradewinds it will be hot.

Yes , i agree that some times it's too difficult to survive without an AC. But i think it's basically depend on the atmospheric location. I spent lots of vacations in Carolina where i stay in a condo and there was no AC but i didn't miss that because the atmospheric condition was awesome near the beach.

It's not fair that if you are paying huge money on condos and you don't have AC facility over there. If the atmosphere is not cool then you should have AC and you should definitely ask for it.

In the times I've stayed in Kauai and Oahu without a/c, I've been pretty miserable. I get very hot and night and do not sleep well without a cool room.

I would want a/c for sure.

As someone mentioned above, there are tons of condos with a/cs in Maui. If you could provide details about how many people are staying in the condo + budget, then we might be able to give you some good suggestions.

On my last trip I rented a condo (4 adults) on VRBO at Kaanapali Alii. Air conditioned, and a 2 minute walk from a fantastic beach.

I presume our OP has been to Maui and back by now, but this question comes up frequently.

We have been visiting Hawaii in winter for over 30 years. I would never rent anywhere there, in any season, if A/C was not an option. Few visitors are there long enough to 'acclimate' , and many residents would LIKE to have the option, but can't afford the astounding electical costs.

Trade Winds don't blow EVERY day and night. When they cease, you feel the humidity that is there all along. Sometimes you'll have Kona winds, and sometimes they bring vog from the volcano on Big Island.

NEVER sleep in an unsecured condo or home. You are easy prey to druggies/burglars. It's a paradise, not Paradise.

So how do you get the trade winds at night even if they ARE blowing, if you can't leave your door open? (I need air conditioning regardless -- I sleep with the windows open in winter)
