Maui AM radio station songs
I am just back from Maui, where I listened to Hawaiian music on an AM radio station (AM 900). The haunting refrain of certain ukelele backed songs seems to be indelibly burned into my consciousness. I must hear those songs again.
I dont even know if that was "classic" Hawaiian music, contemporary Hawaiian music, or just something that they only play for tourists. Is there anyone who lives in Maui that listens to AM 900 that can tell me what kind of music it is, and where I can buy it? It seems like they would play the same songs over and over again somewhat frequently (I came to recognize a few of the more snappy tunes). Thanks for the help.

I listen online to IRH..Internet Radio Hawaii. It is not the station you are looking for, but,if you like Hawaiian music, you may enjoy this.
Since it is an internet site, the atrists had to sign on to have their songs played. The selection of songs is very good.
Try it.

I don't know much about the Maui stations, but if you have the call letters you can find them on the internet. On Oahu I listen to 2 stations for Hawaiian music: KINE and KCCN. you can listen to them off the Internet at:

Also, any music you hear on the radio is for locals AND tourists. We don't really have any stations that are for tourists only.

Thanks -
Is there a big distinction between older Hawaiian music and the more recent stuff? The stuff I was listening to sounded like it could have come from the 50s or something. But I dont know - they might be making it that way now. Should I get one of those Hawaiian greatest hits CDs, or is there a really good one anyone would recommend?

On our recent trip to Hawaii I had the good fortune to stumble across my favorite CD: IZ (Israel) - "Facing Future". We played it in our car every day while there and constantly since returning home. Brings back such good memories. One of the best tracks, his version of "Over the Rainbow" was used in the TV "ER" show when Anthony Edward's character Dr Mark Greene died. in Hawaii.

I know exactly the music you are talking about. I think the station is called "Island Radio" I think a lot of the music they play are 50s cover tunes done up "Hawaiian Style". I would do an internet search and try to contact the station...they could probably point to you to the right CDs to buy....Although I'm not sure if those songs would sound as good here as they do in Maui!
