Maui airports: OGG vs JHM?

Hello everybody,

We are family of four (2 kids 3 and 1) travelling to Maui from
Aug 19-23.
We are trying to figure out which airport to fly into OGG vs JHM?
We will be staying at Napili village and so JHM (8 min) will be much closer than OGG (55 min).

We are wondering if anybody has expereince of renting car from JHM?
We have been told by discountcar rental that there are no car rental near JHM so we have to call them once we get down at airport. They would then pick us up by shuttle and take to their office from where we rent the car.
Does anybody know how much time process takes and would it be more straightforward to fly into OGG and drive an hour to reach Napili village?
The airfare from oahu to either OGG or JHM is same.
Thanks for any info you may be able to provide.

OGG is the main airport in Kahului, so you'll probably find the most commercial flights there and also all the car rental agencies etc. It is honestly not as far as people think it is to drive to West Maui - it's like 45 minutes driving at a nice pace and the drive is lovely, views of the ocean to the left and mountains to the right. Plus, if you are a member, costco is in Kahului near OGG so you can stop for supplies if you want to. I wouldn't bother with the hassle of renting a car from Kapalua airport - at OGG you just get your car and you're off!

Few visitors use JHM. Almost everyone flies via OGG. From there it is 20 minutes to Kihei and Wailea and 50 minutes to Napili.

JHM is VERY convenient to Napili. I assume you are considering that to avoid a 45 minutes plus car ride with 2 young children. I do know that Avis - and perhaps Hertz - has an office near the airport which is literally 5 minutes away. It is a very small airport, and no one has rental cars at the airport itself.

The planes that fly into JHM are considerably smaller than those that fly into OGG. Know what aircraft you would be getting and decide if you are comfortable. That is the trade off you make for a shorter drive.

Mokulele Airlines, Pacitic Wings and go! are the carriers that I know of that fly into this airport. They fly 9 seat single engine turbo prop Cessenas. We've flown on these planes from OGG to Hana several times. They are fine if you are not bothered by small, single engine prop planes. No drink service and no restrooms. :)

I also was wondering, when you say you can get flights into both places euqally. Because of the secondary airport not accomodating big jets.
