Maui airport hotel

We have an overnight stop in Maui en route to Kauai. Any suggestions for a decent hotel close to the airport, preferably with shuttle service?

I've been to Maui about 12 times but can't recall any hotels near the a/p. Anyone else out there know of any ??? Flights are so short between the islands why do you want to stay overnight at the a/p before going on to Kauai?

Lori, unfortunately my flight arrives in Maui at 5:50 PM, and the last flight to Kauai leaves at 6:09. With baggage claim, etc, I doubt I could make the connection. Later flights out of Maui go through Honolulu, and I would end up spending the night there. I entertained the thought of doing that because I would like to see Pearl Harbor, but could be too complicated with luggage, etc. Any thoughts? // I really don't want to spend top dollar for a hotel in Maui for one night. I'll be returning to Maui after my stay in Kauai and will be at the Kea Lani. I have found two hotels that seem close to the airport in Maui -- the Maui Seaside and the Maui Beach in Kahului. There is also a place called the Old Wailuku Inn in Wailuku. Know anything about them?

i'll jump in, having stayed at all 3 places. if u don't have a car, don't want to rent one overnite, and will be returning to maui, then:

maui beach and maui seaside are abt 5 minutes from the airport, both in kahului. very basic (read cheap--just places to shower/sleep at). tiny, nondescript pool; don't know abt beach access, tho i don't think this area per se is known for beaches. few tourists, lots of hawaii locals attending quick functions in central maui.

old wailuku inn is abt 15 minutes from the airport, in wailuku. it's a b&b at the base of the west maui mountains and the entrance to iao valley, miles from the beach. i love this place--lots of atmosphere, beautiful rooms, good breakfasts. one of the few big old houses in wailuku, fmrly owned by shoe store owner, built ard turn of century. in a more residential neighborhood abt 5 minutes' walk from wailuku main street, which is very small.

for one night i'd choose old wailuku inn.

Thanks, Marigoing. The Wailuku Inn did look lovely, but unfortunately had a two-night minimum and we'd have to rent two rooms. There are four of us. I have two children, 12 and 13.

The Maui Seaside looks like the better of the other two. Is there anything at all of interest around there? Or should I spend a little more and go farther away. We won't get there until 5:50 and will probably be gone by 11 the next day. Of the better hotels, which area would be the most convenient to the airport? Thanks.

islandhoppa--

too bad abt old wailuku inn. re ur question abt anything to do ard maui seaside (which is next door to maui beach, so distance is same), there really isn't much. am assuming ur question is for things to do at nite, given ur schedule.

maui seaside is across the street from a major mall (forget right now--kaahumanu ctr or maui mall) w/ restaurants and movies. not much nite life in ctr of island.

if u have kids, u might prefer to stay the one nite in lahaina, where u can walk up and down front street along the beach. actually one side is along the beach and both sides are lined w/ shops, restaurants, arcades. lahaina is hawaii's old capital and a 19th-century whaling town, so it has a lot more atmosphere. from the airport i'd figure on abt a one-hour drive, tho. i have heard of a shuttle service, but u'd have to ask a hotel.

if u have a car, plan on doing absolutely nothing that nite except eat dinner (don't eat at maui seaside or maui beach) and maybe have an hour in the morning, iao park just past wailuku wd be nice. it's a starkly beautiful historic site, the place where king kamehameha defeated the maui armies on his way to uniting the hawaiian islands in the 18th century. u can do a short paved walk-hike. takes abt 15 minutes to get there from maui seaside, and 20 minutes from iao to airport.
