MAUI - accommodations in paia
 

can anyone recommend a nice accommodation in or near Paia? we are going to a wedding in Haiku and would like something close by. will spend up to $300 per night - doesn't need to be fancy but needs to be clean and cane spider free. thanks!

There are no hotels in this immediate area. Most of the accommodations will be cottages or B&B's. Up the hill a few miles from Paia is a lovely property with a big house and some smaller studio-type cottages. It's called Banyan Tree House. I loved the setting when I stayed there a couple years ago. The website is:

I can't imagine spending my vacation in Hawaii in Paia. A funky, but rather ugly little town.

We spent a long weekend in one of the garden cottages at The Inn at Mama's -- affiliated with Mama's Fish House in Pai`a, and enjoyed it immensely. Kinda funky, but clean and quiet -- and dinner at Mama's Fish House was waiting for us just a few steps away! 8-)

I second Auntie's suggestion of Mama's. We've never stayed there but the outside is very, very Hawaiian and it's right on the water - great location!

I stayed at the Tropohouse in Haiku 6 years ago. At that time it was a basic, clean and very friendly BnB. The house is separate from the owner's residence which is still on the property. I want to take back my recommendation made at that time for Banyan Tree House. I returned for a week in 2007. Different on-site manager; not nearly as nice.
Cleanliness and general peaceful ambiance both had gone downhill.

This is again an example of why the editors and moderators should give disclosure when they delete part of a thread.

There was a person topping all things Maui to advertise the Paia Inn, a newly remodeled boutique hotel in the heart of Paia town. They were clearly advertising.

It looks like a nice place.

Any news on the shutdown of private rentals north of Paia?

Regarding private rentals:

I was on Maui last week. Ongoing articles in Maui News about pros and cons of allowing more licenses for B&B's and transient vacation rentals. It appears that an agreement is close that would allow B&B's to operate in residential areas as long as certain conditions are met: owner must live on property, no street parking, observance of noise restrictions during certain hours, etc.
The TVR issue is more contentious, and revolves mostly around land zoned for agriculture.
I have enjoyed cottage rentals in the past and hope there is a compromise that would allow some to continue.

Oh, Brian in Charlotte, how can you call Paia ugly?!

There is a new inn in town; I just checked it out yesterday. It's very stylish, clean, and (dare I say) sophisticated for Paia. Probably a little noisy, as it's right above the road. But it's an awesome location with a right-of-way to Paia Bay, which is a gorgeous stretch of beach you can have all to yourself in the early morning. It's just called Paia Inn. Rates are around $150 and more for suites.

The advertisements for the Paia Inn are getting obnoxious. Oh, sorry, I mean the faux-endorsements.
