Maui
Where will we find the calmest waters during August in Maui? We have 2 small children with us so it's important to have calm waters and very little wind. On what part of the island should we base ourselves?

The calmness of water at any beach in Maui varies day by day so always check the surf reports or ask lifeguards before you take the little ones. Also the local evening news has excellent surf reports for the following day. That being said, some beaches that have the most calm days per year are Baby Beach in Lahaina, Wailea beach in Wailea, the beach next to Black Rock in kaanapali, Kapalua bay. All of those are on the west side of Maui except Wailea which is on the south side. North and east side beaches are mostly not good for small children. Other posters may have additional suggestions.

You will often find calmer waters where there are coral reefs that keep the large waves from breaking near the shore. "Baby Beach" in Lahaina (at the Jodo Mission with the great Buddha), and Olowalu on Highway 30 at mile marker 14 (popular snorkeling site) are your best bets. There is also another "Baby Beach" in Spreckelsville on the north side, but not as good as the one in Lahaina.

Kapalua Bay in the morning is very nice! ***kim*** ((#))

Forgot to mention that there is Launiupoko beach park that has a wading pool for little kids. This is located at the first traffic signal heading into Lahaina Town heading north.
