hi all,
thanks again for the additional info/suggestions!
we have taken all your ideas into consideration and have booked a rental car from logan when we arrive, and are driving out to our friends' place (i'll just make sure we miss the rush when we arrive).
i asked about the worcester common outlets since i figured it was nearby...but alas, i'm told no nike shop (other half is mr. nike). i think we're going to wrentham village. i wanted to go to the outlet shops since we need to buy quite a few items for friends/relatives in england (since they remind us christmas is coming and things are cheaper in the US). while we're down thataways, i want to head into providence or newport for the rest of the day. i need to check store times but i figure as long as we make it to the shops by dark we'll be ok heading back to worcester after shopping.
another day we plan to go to concord and lexington, and if time permits to go to ayer to take some nostalgia photos for my dad who was stationed at fort devens back in the '60s. try to also see walden pond.
i also have sturbridge village on my list, and still debating over a final day trip. we've decided to skip[ hyannis/nantucket and save it for another time, since we hope to go back another time during peak foliage season (especially if we miss the late colors).
thanks again for the advice and ideas!

Lani,
I'll weigh in here at this late date. If you have a day to spare, suggest you look into touring portions of the Blackstone Valley National Historic Area:
http://www.nps.gov/blac/
Extending from Worcester to Narragansett bay, it is the birthplace of the American industrial revolution.

If you are worried about hitting evening traffic, then when you arrive at Logan, don't bother picking up luggage & renting a car just yet. Take the free shuttle out to the airport "T" station, and head into town for a few hours. Have dinner, do some sightseeing and/or shopping, then return later. I love NYC, but I'd much rather enjoy New England - much more relaxed. Enjoy!
