Martha's Vineyard vs. Nantucket

We are an active mid 50's couple wanting to spend a day on one of the islands sightseeing. Can't decide which one. I have heard that Martha's is difficult to get around, ie: buses are crowded, bikes are dangerous, etc... Heard that Nantucket is easier because it is smaller and less crowded, but trip over is much longer. If you could only go to one island which would it be and why?

Well, I had that option a few years ago, and my Boston friends recommended Nantucket. I took their advice and I thoroughly enjoyed my day trip to the island. I hopped on a sight seeing bus almost as soon as I got off the ferry, and then spent the rest of my day around the harbor area. A very lovely day indeed!

Nantucket - smaller, easier get around, charming... For a beach vacation maybe would consider MV but for a day trip Nantucket.

The fast ferry to Nantucket from Hyannis takes an hour. The Steamship Authority ferry is cheaper and more often on time than the Hy-Line. Both can be googled for prices and schedules. The Hy-Line comes into the center of town, the Steamship comes in two blocks from the center.

I would suggest that you book a tour with Gail's Tours: http://www.nantucket.net/tours/gails/ She will pick you up. I have no connection with her; I just see her doing a good job every day.

Get her overview of Nantucket, and you can decide what else you want to do: walk up and down Main Street doing shopping, walk further out Main into the area with historic houses, go down the quaint side streets off Orange Street, or out Centre beyond the Jared Coffin House.

If you have the time, I can strongly recommend a sail on the Endeavor, a Friendship sloop, but must say that the owners are dear friends of mine: www.endeavorsailing.com. The Whaling Museum on Broad is awesome, if you prefer history museums. I hate the exterior, but the interior is fascinating.

Where to eat lunch downtown: I can't recommed anywhere on Main. Ditto Straight Wharf unless you get sandwiches from Provisions. If you want really interesting food and like spice, Corazon del Mar on Water Street is excellent and well-priced at lunch. The Brotherhood of Thieves on Broad has a pleasant outdoor seating area in the rear. Don't eat anything ambitious there. All the takeout places on Steamboat Wharf do a good job for what they have. You notice I haven't listed any place where you can sit on the water and eat fried seafood. There used to be the RopeWalk on Straight Wharf but an expensive and apparently mediocre restaurant called Cru has replaced it. Try Easy Street Cafe at the corner of Easy Street and Steamboat Wharf. Ask to sit upstairs.

Have a wonderful time. This is our 21st year here, and believe me it is very different living here than being a tourist, but we remember when we were!
