Martha's Vineyard or Nantucket
 

We are planning a romantic 6 day getaway to this part of the country and were wondering what you experts consider a better value. Please include your favorite bed and breakfast as well! Thank you!

I don't know about value between the two islands because the last time I was on the Vineyard was when I was a girl scout (yeah don't ask how long ago THAT was) but here's a vote for the Wauwinet on Nantucket. I've mentioned it on another question related to Nantucket vs. Martha's Vineyard but it's worth mentioning again. It's pricey but it has an excellent restaurant called Topper's; breakfast is included every morning, and I don't mean continental. Rooms are gorgeous, the inn in general is very romantic, out from town but the place provides service in a charming old car (a "jitney" as they call it) often enough for it to not have been a problem NOT having a car. We stayed something like 6 or 7 nights and it was GRAND. Would go there again in a heartbeat. Good luck!

Puddin, thanks for your suggestion but I think we'd like to visit both islands and spend more time in Martha's Vineyard given the fact that it is significantly less expensive than Nantucket. We found a B&B called The Victorican Inn, it looks to be promising. As for Nantucket, I saw the Wauwinet property on the web and fell in love with it right away! But boy, $400 the night is too pricey for us right now. Do you remember the Westmoor Inn? Could you recommend it?

I don't remember the Westmoor Inn, sorry to say, so I really can't say anything about it. I don't think we paid THAT much per night at the Wauwinet although I do remember it being expensive. We went in May 2000 so maybe the rates have gone up a bit, but yes it is pricey as I said. Wherever you stay I hope you have a great time as we did. Nantucket is so beautiful. I didn't realize there was such a difference in "pricey-ness" so to speak between the two islands. Interesting. Anyway, I hope you find somewhere nice to stay in Nantucket. I don't think it will be difficult. Good luck!

I've been to both prefered Nantucket over the Vinyard. Rent a moped and drive out to the beaches.... BEAUTIFUL!There are some that are very secluded and romantic. The Vinyard is nice too but I feel much more touristy then Nantucket. I guess its a matter of opinion.... anyway whatevere you choose have a great time.I envey you I am from mass. but live in Florida now and miss Mas. in the summer... nothing like it anywhere.

Sorry fogot to tell you that you can take a ferry between the two islands.If you go the Vinyard have lunch @ The Black Dog restaurant on the waterfront. I"ts a great "little" place.

I'm staying at The Victorian in Edgartown this July ironically. I've heard nothing but good things about it.

I stayed on Nantucket last year and loved it. The Wauwinet is nice, Tauck Tours stays there, but a B&B it isnt.
I liked Cliff Lodge on Cliff road, great location close to town. There are lots of nice places to stay there, 4 Chimneys, Summer House, Chestnut, Pineapple, Roberts House, and Union Street Inn are all nice. You mentioned the Westmoor... lets see I think thats the one that had been a Vanderbilt summer home. I biked up to it one morning its at the end of a long driveway, bright yellow so its easy see it, it looked nice but its way up Cliff Road and I wouldn't call it walking distance to town by any means.

As far as bargains go I would have to say your best bet of finding them on Nantucket are: Cliff Lodge(I only paid 150.00 and my room while not large by any means wasnt the smallest and was certainly large enough) Chestnut House, run by a fantastic family, Stumble Inn a little farther out but nice, The Nesbitt Inn may be THE cheapest but all the rooms share a bath and is often taken up by wedding partys, Nantucket Landfall which is very close to the wharf has some cheaper rooms too. A lot of these places will have a room under 200.00 but it may only be ONE room such as the Pineapple with its first floor room. Oh, Roberts House and also the Mitchell House should have at least one or two rooms under 200.00 also.

I dont know if The Vineyard is much cheaper than Nantucket. I'm definitely paying more at the Victorian than I paid last year on Nantucket. If you do stay on both Islands I recommend flying between the two. To be there in 15 minutes is well worth... 80.00 dollars as opposed to hours on the ferry. Last year I went to the Vineyard just for the day and then back to Nantucket and at first I thought it would be fun taking the ferry, I like boats etc, but then you're on in just as long coming back and you dont get nearly as much time either as the last one back to Nantucket left at like...4:00 maybe earlier.

Oh, the only thing and there really was only ONE thing I didn't like while on Nantucket was their local theatre. I love local theatre, but theirs was really bad, but I am quite certain thats not the case most of the time! The Playhouse on the Vineyard at Vineyard Haven was quite good though.
Also while on the Vineyard check out Aquinnah and the little fishing village Menemsha.

What time of year are you going? This September will be my 5th trip to the Vineyard but I wouldn't recommend going to either island during the summer if you can avoid it. There are many more people on the islands and it's more expensive to stay at most places. I've always stayed at The Oak House in Oak Bluffs. The innkeepers are very nice, the house is lovely and the breakfasts and afternoon tea treats are yummy. A car is necessary on Martha's Vineyard if you are spending more than a few days there. Otherwise it's difficult to really see the whole island. Nantucket is smaller and it's more expensive to bring your car over on the ferry.
