We rent a contemporary house on the Vineyard near Edgartown every year. Three bedrooms, 2 baths, deck, for 1600 for the week. There are all prices and all sizes and in various conditions. We used a broker and he found just what we wanted. He sent us the specs of several houses on Email. Remember that you have to make reservations to bring your car on the ferry months in advance.

We rented a 2 bedroom, one bath, very nice just renovated cottage on Hummock pond in Nantucket for $2000 a week in July, plus cleaning. The same cottage will be $2200 in '03. That's considered a bargain in Nantucket. The Vineyard is cheaper. The cost of bringing the car is $ 340 plus passenger tickets (about $ 75.00 for 2 adults, 2 kids), which adds over $ 400 to the cost. If renting a house, you really need a car.

evelyn is right, you need to get on the phone the first day they open reservations at the Steamship authority to get a chance of getting a car reservation. That's usually in the beginning of February.
