Martha's Vineyard, Early May - What is open? Favorites?

Hi There,
We will be on the island in early May for a wedding, staying in Edgartown for about 6 days. I'm wondering if many of the restaurants will be open at that time?

I would also appreciate any current recommendations for restaurants, or anything else, since I haven't been since college and that was a (*cough, cough) few years ago.

Thanks!

May is part of our "shoulder season" on Cape Cod and the Islands. In early May, seasonal businesses are just waking up, opening up, and getting ready for the tourism rush that'll begin with the un-official start of summer on Memorial Day weekend.

Early May is a wonderful time to be on the Vineyard, IMHO. The weather can be chilly at times, with the wind off the water. But in early May you'll still feel like you have the island to yourself.

I wouldn't worry too much about a lack of dining choices. Between the year-round restaurants on the island, and those that have opened up for the season, you shouldn't have any problem at all finding great spots to dine.

As for specific restaurant recommendations, I hope some MV locals and long-time visitors will jump in here with suggestions.

My hubby and I visit MV several times a year, but we come in by boat after fishing around the island, and we tend to just grab a bite to eat wherever it's handy at the moment. So I don't consider myself well-versed enough on Edgartown dining establishments to offer a helpful opinion.

Enjoy your time on the Vineyard!

I think the biggest question is how you will get around. I know that on Nantucket, our buses don't start until late May, a car rental is $50 a day, and gas is $4.99 a gallon as of yesterday. The Vineyard is closer to the mainland so costs may be lower, but it is much more spread out than we are with Oak Bluffs, Vinyard Haven, Edgartown, Chappaquidick, Gay Head, and Menemsha all worth visiting and all spread out.

Thanks for your replies.

I already have car ferry reservations, as do many of my relatives coming over from the mainland, so transportation will not be a problem.

So, please, fire away with any specific food or activity recommendations!

Sorry. The "Ack" in my screen name is the airport code for Nantucket. I know lots about Nantucket but have only been to the Vineyard once. I love Menemsha, but there probably won't be any place open to eat there. The island season doesn't really begin until Memorial Day.

If you want to fly over to Nantucket for the day I can make lots of recommendations!
