Martha's Vineyard
 

In Boston area right after Labor Day would like to visit Martha's Vineyard one night. If you had one night and two days what would you do and where would you stay? What about restaurants?

I'd stay in Edgartown. And take it from there.

I'm with Gyppielou, I like Edgartown best. Good combination of nice inns, some shopping, scenery and good restaurants.

we stayed at the Shiretown Inn last winter and I thought it was very nice. But if I had a bundle to spend, I might try to stay at the Charlotte Inn and have dinner at L'Etoile.

My favorite Edgartown restaurants are Atria and Alchemy.

If the weather is still warm, I'd spend a day on the beach. I really like East Beach, on Chappaquidick, and I might rent a bicycle to get there. Or take the shuttle bus to South beach. (I'm assuming no car, because I don't think I'd take one for a 1 night trip). I might also take the day tour of the island, so that I could get out to Aquinnah to see the cliffs, probably the most scenic part of the island.

If I had some time before I left on the ferry, I'd walk around Oak Bluffs, and see the tiny Victorian cottages in the Campground, and shop for souvenirs on Ocean Ave. or, if my ferry was leaving from Vineyard Haven, I might stop by the Black Dog for lunch, or to pick up some goodies from the bakery and the obligatory 2005 tee shirt.

If you go, nancytwo, be sure to stop over and pick up something from the Black Dog store... Something with the famous black lab printed on it, maybe a coffeemug/frisbee/apron/tshirt/ballcap/mousepad. They make great father's day/birthday/Christmas/Kwanzaa/graduation gifts!!

HI TripleSec...If you don't mind another perspective re: mementos of a certain vacation spot--I have a relative whose intentions are good, who always brings me and the family souvenirs of *her* trip. Noone appreciates commemorating her vacations, esp when they are places that do not have a meaning to the recipient.

It seems that the enjoyment in having a souvenir comes from visiting the vacation spot onesself. Now I am very aware that I am only expressing my thoughts, and please forgive me if I am not expressing them very eloquently, but I would not be especially happy to receive a memento of a place that has no intrinsic meaning to me.

I know the place you mention well, but I cannot help but wonder what it is that makes you think that someone else, who might not know it, would be interested or enjoy a gift from it. I am truly not trying to be unkind, but would like to understand the motivation of those who do this, as it has been a bone of contention in our entire family for many years. Thanks.

You win the prize, socialworker! I was being sarcastic. I share sentiments similar to those you expressed.

In particular with the Black Dog thing, I find it realllllly silly that people will purchase seemingly annnnnnnything bearing the silhouette of a Labrador Retriever.

I had family on Martha's until recently. The home was sold. They're fine. When we visited the very first time, the Black Dog marketing phenomenon was a five minute novelty that evaporated quickly. Since then, I keep my eye on it a bit.

I study marketing as a side interest. People will buy anything bearing the Nike swoosh, or the logo from the rock band KISS, or Mercedes-Benz. It's mildly fascinating to me.

Now, TripleSec, you would expect more "insight" from someone who does therapy for a profession, wouldn't you?? :) :) :) But you were *so* convincing in the way you expressed it that I thought, "Ah finally I can understand this w/o having to hurt my sister's feelings!!" Thank you for the best laugh I have had all week, and I guess I will just have to keep searching for the answer to my question.
