Marriott Wardman alternate?
 

Hi everyone. I will be travelling to Washington next month for a conference and also plan to spend a few extra days afterwards enjoying the city. The conference hotel is the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel, which is sold out for the days I will be there - does anyone have any suggestions for an nice alternative that is not too far away - I don't mind cabbing it but I don't want to spend too much time schleping back and forth (although from what I can tell, there do not seem to be many other hotels in that area).

The Omni Shoreham is across the street.

Two Metro stops north is the Days Inn Connecticut Avenue, and one more stop north is Embassy Suites Chevy Chase and Holiday Inn Chevy Chase.

One Metro stop South is DuPont Circle, which has at least 15 hotels.

You might also look at the Woodley Park Guest House (also just across the street) - http://www.woodleyparkguesthouse.com/

I agree that the Omni Shoreham would be a good choice in that area.

The Marriott is literally next-door to the Woodley Park Metro stop, so almost any other hotel in downtown DC that's also handy to a Red Line metro stop would be convenient enough; check Stationmasters, mentioned above, for hotels' proximity to Metro stations. The Marriott Metro Center is on the same block as the Metro station that serves several lines, 3 stops from Woodley Park.

Thanks so much. The stationmasters site is very useful - I didn't realize the Wardman was only a stop away from Dupont Circle - that is very helpful. Woodley Park Guest House is booked for the time I need but I am thinking of staying at the Mansion on O Street - I generally try to avoid the "chains" and I only looked into the Marriot because the conference is there, so it was convenient but as I also am staying for a few days of leisure, I don't mind a smaller hotel/B&B.

I have to second the Woodley Park Guest House. It's a B&B but very nice. Excellent service. A little more homey than a hotel but not to "in your business" type. Excellent restuarants in the area.

Adams Inn is right there too. We had a reserv for this last Aug, but got great rate at Omni instead so went with the big one. Was great except for $25/day parking. Adams Inn sounded ok and had mostly good reviews and inexpensive.

Thanks for the replies and information. Long story but I did choose to stay at a small inn at Dupont Circle, but was unhappy with it and checked out after the first night and stayed at the Sofitel for the remainder of the trip - which wasn't exactly close to the Wardman, but cab rides/subway were pretty quick and I have never been disappointed with a Sofitel. Washington is a terrific city and I cannot wait to go back, next time hopefully for more leisure!
