Marriott San Mateo - good choice?
Is this hotel a good choice for Fri-Sun stay for a solo traveler?
How far from airport? Thanks |
It's fine, and only about 5 miles from the airport, but why are you staying there? Are you visiting someone/something on the Peninsula, or are you planning to sightsee in the city?
|
Thanks for your response. It is a stopover.
Your recommendations for other hotels and areas will be greatly appreciated. |
Even if it's a stopover, wouldn't you rather be in San Francisco than in a suburb about 18 miles to the south of downtown?
|
San Mateo is a small town. Got movie theater, restaurants, coffee shops, etc but nothing out of the ordinary or worth the travel to it. I would suggest staying at the city as well. Friends of ours stayed at the W as well as St.Regis. Both are nice. If you are wanting to stay away from the city, Palo Alto would be my choice instead of San Mateo. Westin of Palo Alto is nice.

I live in San Mateo and do almost all of my dining/theater/sightseeing/hanging out/touring/shopping in San Francisco. We're leaving in about 10 mins for a Victorian Alliance meeting and then dinner in The City.

We have stayed there a few times when leaving early the next AM for a flight. It is a very nice hotel.
There really isn't much, OK nothing, around the hotel. It is mostly an industrial/business area that is empty after 5:00 PM. If you got a good price then stay there. You can catch the hotel shuttle over to the airport, catch the BART into downtown SF and then do the same in reverse when coming back. |
James, just checking, did you stay at the Airport Marriott (which is in on the east side of 101 in Burlingame) or the San Mateo Marriott, which is on the west side of 101 in San Mateo?
|
For a 12 hour layover it is a great hotel. But for 2+ days the Marriott doesn't make any sense IMHO.
Priceline a hotel in Union Square West and spend the time in SF - not down on the peninsula. |
I completely agree with janis and, like stududley, I live nearby (but work in the city). It's a nice place to live, but not a tourist destination.
|
It was probably the Airport Marriott east of Hwy 101.
|
The Airport Marriott (in Burlingame) is a nicer hotel than the Marriott in San Mateo . It's more like a downtown hotel. The other one is fine, but not as much like a "city" hotel.

Stu Dudley, I just realized that I know you...I mean, as in: we've met each other in real life. (Assuming that your wife is the wonderful woman who keeps a running tally on the front window of your lovely house, which I walk by with my dog.) Your wife and I took Pilates classes together at Prime Time...ohmygod, this is a very small world! I don't give out my email here, but I'm sure your wife will know who I am...just ask her if she remembers the talkative little woman who was in the middle of a house remodel. :)
|
Lucie, we are really getting OT here, but do you belong to Prime Time? So do I.
|
OMG, dmlove, this is weird, huh?! I'm the one who's always on the bike with the internet...posting on Fodor's, of course.
|
Hi Lilly/Lucy
Yes, I'm me. We just got back from 4 weeks in Europe, so we have not gotten around to posting the count. We put our Prime Time membershop on hold for Sept, so my wife has not been to Pilates class (except once on a guest pass). Stu Dudley |
