I question the 10% figure. That may be the publicity "rate". I too have ended up in a smoking room. Seems like the rule of thumb at Fairfield Inns and Courtyards is to give the type of room first, then apply the non smoking request. If smoke free rooms are sold out in the type of room category, then the customer gets a smoking room.
I had my profile on the web site changed after I complained. That was when I learned the procedure, something of which I had no knowledge.
