Marriott Grand Dunes Resort Myrtle Beach

Has anyone stayed here before and any opinions on the place? I am headingthere this weekend on a 4 day trip to Myrtle. I see the pictures on the Marriott website but want first hand accounts of how the place is.

Thanks!

We saw it just days before it opened.
Looks like a nice, elegant property.
Very big.

Went to a cocktail party there.

Gorgeous but construction going on around the place. Looks very Floridian.

Has anyone stayed at this resort recently? Going June 30 to July 7, 2006. Any suggestions about activities with a "young 13 year old boy?
Thanks!

I've stayed there four times. It is my favorite MB resort. The pools are very relaxing. My kids love the waterslide.

The hotel is elegant; you might forget you are at the beach unless you open the sliding door.

The resort is self contained. You will need a car.

As for the thirteen year old; there is no arcade and the waterslide maybe a little tame for him.

My friends and I are looking for a place for Memorial Day weekend.

But, we want seperate bedrooms. Does this place have suites? You know where there is a common area then private rooms and baths?

The marriott compound includes a hotel which the thread was describing and timeshare condos which can also be rented. My children and sister-in-law stayed at the timeshares last summer and they were very nice. The condos are more than the hotel (about $300-$530 a night) but we used a AAA discount and our AAA membership paid for itself when my sister-in-law broke down on the way home.

The waterslide is for the hotel guests not condo guests as my children found out last year.

Inquire about construction. They were still building units last fall. My kids were initally placed in a unit that was near the construction last summer, but where moved when they asked for a quieter condo.

Frenchtoile,

Re-think your apparent plans to travel to Myrtle Beach for Memorial Day Weekend.

That is, unless you have a ninja motorcycle and plan to participate in the hedonistic, ear-splitting, traffic-stopping weekend that is Memorial Day weekend in this area.

Even though the Marriott Grande Dunes is somewhat tucked away from the madness, it will still be a very, very wild weekend. 350,000 bikers will guarantee that. Here's a link that will give you a taste of what is to come later this month.

Thanks Beach Dweller for the FYI! Oh my!

I had forgotten it was that time of year. I now need to figure out where we are going to go.

I love Charleston area. So perhaps Mt. Pleasant.

Frenchtoile,

Charleston rocks! Literally, as Travel Girl 67 pointed out in another thread, the Beach Boys are playing there Memorial Day weekend.

Isle of Palms, Wild Dunes are great beaches in the Mt. Pleasant area just 20 minutes or so from downtown Charleston. Sounds like that would make a great weekend, if there's still any availability.

JJason,

sorry for hijacking your thread!
