Someone told me that just read in the paper that Marriott bought the Hyatt or Hilton on Maui. Does anyone know the real scoop?

Keep in mind that not all Marriotts are owned by Marriott Corp and not all Hyatts are owned by Hyatts. Some are franchises run by individual companies. These companies may own numerous hotels flying different flags.

Sounds like it is a franchise.

The Hyatt Maui was purchased by Host Marriott (not to be confused with the Marriott International hotel brand). Host Marriott owns lots of hotels all managed by different companies, Hyatt, Four Seasons, etc. As far as I know, the property will continued to be a Hyatt.

GoTravel had it mostly right. The "Marriott" that bought the hotel is Host Marriott, a hospitality real estate company, not a hotel operating company. They are the ownership group, but the hotel was and is still a Hyatt, run by Hyatt Hotels and Resorts with Hyatt employees. It isn't a franchise though, as the ownership groups hires the corporation, Hyatt, Hilton, Marriott, whomever, to operate the hotel for a percentage of the profits, rather than someone such as Hyatt the operator, buying the right to run it under their name. When it comes time for renovations it's the ownership group putting the money up and controlling what is spent where. There are any number of these ownership groups...one of the larger and more familiar ones being GE Capital, and Host Marriott buying the hotel would be no different than GE Capital buying it--they do not operate it, nor would the name become "GE Capital" .

That isn't the only Host Marriott owned hotel that Hyatt operates--Grand Hyatt Atlanta and I believe Hyatt Regency Cambridge as well are both owned by Host Marriott. The hotel we are in is one of the very few Hyatt actually owns as well as operates. Most of the large chains operate similarly--very few of actually own many of their individual hotels. So...all that has changed is the ownership group, it will continue to operate as a Hyatt.
