Marquis or Waldorf?

Visiting New York soon and can get a decent, comparable deal on both the Marriott Marquis in Times Square and the Waldorf Astoria on Park Avenue. Which would you recommend?

If I had the choice, I would choose the Waldorf. Location is very good, and out of the "hustle" of TS area. And, I just like the Waldorf!

Mind if I ask where you saw the deal? I'm only inquiring because I too am planning a trip - thanks!

I've only stayed at the Waldorf once in a standard room and it was dark, drab, and cramped -- really not a good room. But I've stayed at the Marquis often and it has the nicest standard rooms in New York that I've found. The rooms are quite large and have floor to ceiling wall to wall glass. Each has a sofa and a comfortable lounge chair and ottoman. We usually turn the furniture around and face out -- like a giant screen looking up or down Broadway (we request north for the best view). The elevators there can be a pain, but I still prefer the rooms. Because many of our favorite restaurants are just west of there (particularly Restaurant Row of 46th) you actually may have to work your way through the masses in Times Square less than if you were at the Waldorf. (That is if you go to places like Becco, Joe Allen's, Orso, and Chez Josephine just to mention a few).

Hi Steve Standard rooms at the Waldorf are drab run down and boring Marriot is better Fabulous revolving bar unless you are willing to splash out on the Towers the Waldorf is a complete waste of money Take advice from someone who has wasted his money there.
Have you tried the Milennium or Fitzpatrick at grand central?

Did I miss something here? Is the room Steve is talking about a "standard"? . . .everyone seems to assume so . . .

Patrick Jan 19th, 2003 10:27 AM

Maybe it was an unfair assumption, but since he first mentioned "decent, comparable deal on both", I assumed he was being very price conscious and was therefore looking at standard rooms. And since most rooms at the Marquis are standard and normally price equal to standard rooms at the Waldorf, it just seemed logical to me that's what he was talking about.

How about it Steve?
