Wow, I am sure that you all enlightened the op about the fact that smoking cigarettes is bad for you. In fact, you have probably already inspired him to stop as a result of unsolicited advice from total strangers.

suze Apr 1st, 2005 06:23 AM

Wow, what a preachy bunch! I'm guessing it's no surprise to the OP that smoking is bad for your health. And Tandoori-Girl's statement is just plain wrong, not all smokers want to quit. Credit to the two people who actually answered the posted question.

GoTravel Apr 1st, 2005 07:00 AM

Leave the OP alone. There isn't a smoker still alive that doesn't know how bad smoking is for your health.

By the way, smokers don't smoke for the cigarette but for the nicotine.

A cigarette is the fastest delivery system known to man for a nicotine fix.

Smokers are nicotine addicts not smoking addicts.

Love,
GoTravel (2 1/2 years of being a non-smoker)

Wednesday - the difference is that alcohol is not harmful to most people - only to those few who are alcoholics. In fact- alcohol in moderation is heathful for many people.

Smoking is harmful to everyone - including those around the smoker - who can;t control their involuntary intake.

I too have a family member who's an alcoholic - and while what he's doing to himself is regrettable - at least he's not damaging anyone else's health.

placeu2, a package of cigarettes here in Alberta is now mimimum $10. Depending on where you buy them they can be as high as $12. The price is even higher in B.C. from what I understand.

quoting

"placeu2, a package of cigarettes here in Alberta is now minimum $10. Depending on where you buy them they can be as high as $12."

Well now, at .50 a pop things are getting out of control. Glad that I am a cigar smoker and not burning up that kind of cash.

:& Whoops I might get taken out to the Fodors shed for that admission.

Oh boy placeu2, that was brave!!

greenfieldhunter Apr 1st, 2005 11:32 AM

cigs are still cheaper in the south VA, NC, SC, FL, all about the same if you shop around- less than $4 and around $30 carton

Grisslehamn Apr 1st, 2005 11:45 AM

John Apr 1st, 2005 11:49 AM

hi nytraveler,
I agree with you except for me personally I have been physically and mentally hurt by an alcoholic and so have many others who become victims of drunk drivers, etc. I do understand your explanation of the responsible intake of alcohol and unwilling effects on people around a smoker, I guess it is just an issue I feel strongly about and was compelled to comment. Thanks for your expressing your point of view to me kindly...

sorry- I know I am way off it here and I just realized I didn't have a "point" ...My real point was that when I began to read the posts bashing him instead of answering his questions, it made me think how ironic and sad it is that we treat smoking as a dirty, bad shameful habit that somepne should just "stop" and now force people to be quarantined in public, etc. when years ok it was normal and overlooked. And I felt it ironic that alcohol consumption and alcoholism is socially accepted or a disease that people need medical treatment for. I think many people "have a few" and drive or interact with people innappropriately and just because they don't get caught and it is "legal" it is considered "like it doesn't affect many people". That all, have a good weekend ! sorry for the messy thoughts and inability to express them properly.

If the cost of a pack of cigarettes impacts your travel plans, stay home.

Smokyboy Apr 1st, 2005 03:28 PM

My grandmother, god rest her soul, once said, "Roger, you don't smoke, the cigarette smokes." "You're the sucker".

iceeu2 Apr 1st, 2005 03:34 PM

Well said by Grandma, Roger.

I am glad to report I have been off the nicotine going into 8 years now.

On Thanksgiving Day, 1997, my stepdaughter announced her pregnancy. I decided then and there to quit! That beautiful baby (will be 7 in July) loves for me to tell her the story of why I quit smoking cigarrettes!

So, I say let's lay off the OP and let him/her smoke. Everyone quits when they are ready...or.....broke!!!!

suze Apr 1st, 2005 03:45 PM

Wednesday, I feel your point is valid and well stated. Cigarettes kill smokers and the 2nd hand smoke thing has recently come to light, sure.

But drunk drivers kill completely innocent people who they have never and will never meet. That doesn't even begin to open the can of worms about emotional and mental harm alcoholics do to themselves, family, friends.

We all dies sooner or later.
Im going to FL , just wanted to know what the prices are now i think $30 for a carton is ok :)

Smokyboy, my tobacco of choice was chewing tobacco. A 21 year habit. I was so addicted I had it in my mouth when I was sleeping. In the morning it was the first thing in my mouth again. 24 hours a day. I really feel disgusted now that I did that to myself. In the past five years I have not touched it once and have no cravings at all. But I have dreams at night that I am using it again and wake up so releived that it was only a dream.

jiffer Apr 2nd, 2005 09:54 AM

I dont think some know how much of an addiction it really is. I not saying it is ok to smoke but, but sometimes it just takes control of your life. I know from personal experience. My father smoked for 50 years and got cancer in the mouth. The cancer was so bad that he had to have his entire jaw removed and recontructed. He had to learn to eat, talk and swallow all over again. He was never able to have teeth ever again so he had to eat food that was pureed. Long story short the cancer ended up coming back and ate a hole in his cheek about the size of a quarter. Yes a hole. You could see all the way into his mouth. He passed away last year after a very painful illness. But you know what the kicker of the whole story is? He smoke until the day he died. Like I said I dont think people know how much of an addiction it really is.
