Mark Twain Hotel in San Fran

Hi, from Iowa, this June 2 adults and 3 children staying in San Fran for 2 nights b/f heading north to a wedding in the red woods. Is the Mark Twain in a safe area? We'll take public transportation to get there. We want to be close to the trolly so that we can go where we want. How far from Mark Twain to China Town, if you know.

Thanks,

Hello Choxie, I have never stayed at that hotel. Here is their website, you might want to read the various reviews and also go to TripAdvisor and see how the reviews are there also.
http://www.hotelmarktwain.com/

It is in the Tenderloin, west of Union Square but not far from Union Sq. It is not a hotel I would stay in by myself and wouldn't stay there personally if I had children with me and unless the children were older and use to large cities and the panhandlers and perhaps seeing some drug deals. Do note the maximum in a room is 4 persons.

Anyway, as suggested above do read the reviews so you can decide whether this hotel would be suitable for your family. Best regards.

Regarding Chinatown. Chinatown starts at Grant and Bush, it is an easy walk from the Mark Twain hotel.

The Mark Twain is on the "iffy" side of near the Tenderloin. Even though it is almost across the street from one side of the giant Hilton.

Go one block over and try the King George, which is a hotel with reasonable rates, and not so "iffy" in location.

Better yet, try this one

which is right at the Chinatown Gate.

Good luck.

Hi, LoveItaly. Yes the weather is fantastic. How are things with you?

Taylor between O'Farrell and Ellis? Is the reservation cancellable? Not the safest area.

By "trolly" you mean cable car? In June they will be so packed, you will take them once, and forget it after waiting in a long line!

We also have line F historic trolley that runs along Market, Embarcadero to Pier 39.

The China-town gates are on Bush Street @ Grant, and you walk along Grant. Bus lines 30, 45 on Stockton, 1 block away from Grant.

The problem with a hotel this close to the Tenderloin (the really seedy part of downtown SF) is that if you approach or leave the hotel in the wrong direction you can run into the situation LoveItaly describes (although you will find panhandlers almost anywhere).

Choxie: With kids, I would second jrandolph's suggestions near Union Square or else, try something at Fisherman's Wharf. The kids will enjoy Fisherman Wharf's attractions much more and there's a "trolley" (cable car?) line at the far end of FW next to the Argonaut Hotel.
