March - Kauai weather

We are planning a mid-March trip to
Kauai. Based on my research so far, I am somewhat concerned about the weather. Has anyone traveled to Kauai during March and how concerned should I be about the rain? Are there areas of the island that are "dryer" than others? Also, if Kauai's weather is too "iffy", what other islands would you recommend for a very active family?

westside is dryer than the rest of island and usually rains more on kauai. not has rainy on south shore compared to northside. every single day the forecast is the same, “scattered showers” with temps in hi 70’s to mid 80’s. always iffy. you can still keep your plans for activities. we still go the beach and watch the dreaded “sheet of rain” approach and maybe go around, but once you get the first little drops, run for cover or in the ocean. basically when it rains, it’s sporadic. even spent this past christmas day at hanalei pier, it was cloudy and rained but nobody cared, people were still on the beach, or in the water, bbq’s still going. i guess the only bummer is hiking trails can get muddy but then again if you have good hiking boots and don’t mind getting dirty (except for kalalau trail can get slippery in some areas, not recommended).

not sure what the fuss is about (i don’t know what research you did), this is the second thread today re rain on kauai, unless you’re referring to the 40day rain in 2006 when ka loko dam burst. that was just unusual and a totally isolated incident.

if you’re still concerned about kauai’s weather, go to oahu and big island (my favorite). there’s tons more stuff to do. and come to kauai in the summer, still rains but not as much. we’re trekking to the big island in 11days after our mainland trip - starting this weekend.

aloha and happy planning.

My wife and I spent ten days in late March on the Poipu side of Kauai a few years back and it poured every day and really messed up the trip. We have also been to Maui several times at that time of year and never had any problems. You should investigate further!

kauai_aka,

Aren't you going to Vegas? Have fun!

This is strictly anecdotal of course, but we arrived in Kauai mid-March about 20 years ago and had glorious weather for a week. People we met on the beach, however, told us they had had non-stop rain for 5 weeks straight before we got there.
