marathon in new york

My husband will run his first marathon in New york in november 2005. I'll go with my daughter 2 years old. How the best place for seeing him? Is it dangerous for her?
Let me know your experience...
Thanks
Vânia

I'll ask the same question that was asked of you on the other thread - what do you mean by dangerous for her? In what way?

In terms of best places to watch, I'd say the other thread with many replies should be the best source of information for you. Since you replied to it, you can find it again by clicking your name at the very top of this page.

Do you mean dangerous because it's so crowded?

There are plenty of good spots to watch the marathon. I used to live on 1st Avenue and 87th Street and it was a great spot - not very crowded (maybe 2 people deep) and there's lots of places to get a beer (it's a bit of a party atmosphere), coffee, hot cocoa or a snack. The whole stretch of 1st Avenue from 59th Street on up wouldn't be bad, though probably is more crowded to the south. The end of the Marathon, in Central Park, I think would be almost completely inaccessible. They block everything off.

In 2001 my dad and I went to NY so he could run the marathon (at age 65 no less!). I ended up watching from somewhere in Central Park, but it was a bit of a challenge finding a way in. Found a way in a few blocks up from 72nd/Central Park West. I had a great spot for watching in the park(I think I was near the back of the Met art museum) and I saw the very first runners go by but never saw my dad because by the time all the 'normal' runners are coming by there are SO many of them it's hard to see each person. It was fun anyway though!

Your husband can program his computer chip that he wears on his running shoes so that your cell phone will receive a text message. That way you will be able to know his time and his mile location making it easier for you to determine where he is and where you want to go to see him.

jlm-mi and suzanne
Thanks for your help
Yes, I asked if dangerous for her because it's so crowded.
I'd like a spot that I could to see my husband and he could to see us.
Is there a subway close on 87 with 1st Avenue?
Thanks again

I agree that First Avenue is a good choice. Three subway lines run up Lexington Avenue -- I'd suggest getting off at either the 59th(4/5/6), 68th(6), 77th(6) or 86th(4/5/6) station and walking east to First Ave. It's definitely a fun party atmosphere!

59/60 st. at First Ave. is the spot the runners first hit Manhattan & is a good spot to wait.
