Manhattan to LGA dilemma

Hey gang!!

I know this kind of subject has been beaten like a dead horse on this board, but considering the circumstances, I am still drawing a blank! What would be the cheapest or fastest way to LGA from my office on 20th and 5th in Manhattan? Things to keep in mind are:

1. I'm traveling by myself with a heavy rolling suitcase and a carry on duffel.
2. My flight leaves at 7:15, which means I would be leaving around 5pm.
3. I have had problems finding available taxis at this hour by my office ESPECIALLY when you have luggage.
4. Would take a car service, but find it insane to pay $40 to the airport when it costs less from my house, and that's further from LGA than my office is. (but would use this option as a last resort.)
5. Have taken cabs to Grand Central for NY Airport Service before.
6. There's a game at Shea that day that starts at 1:10pm which means it would let out around 4:30-5pm, causing traffic on the Grand Central!!

I know this sounds tough, so far all I could come up with is either leaving earlier to catch a cab or taking the Super Shuttle, or just giving in to the car service!!

If your company is paying for it, take a car service.

Hi Ms. J. -- Have the car services (the cheap ones) gone up that much? I thought $40 was about the price to JFK, not LGA.

Your point #1 is reason enough to take a car service. Your point #2 just reinforces it -- no staring at the meter clicking over as you sit in traffic for minutes on end.

The only other option would be, as you said, to catch a cab a lot earlier. But then you'll sit at the airport for an extra couple of hours -- so is that worth $20 to you? I'd value my time at more than $10/hour.

Have a great trip!

No, company is not paying for it. (I wish!)

Yes, I just called 3 car services, and they are all in the $35-38 ballpark because I am traveling during "peak" time!! I'm just thinking about biting the bullet and paying it since my experiences finding a taxi around here have been less than stellar...

Ok negotiated a little and got $29 with Carmel and $32 will Allstate. Now I'll just pick one and pray there isn't much traffic on the Grand Central Parkway due to the Mets game!
