Manhattan,NY Where to Park Car for Week?
 

I am visiting New York and will be staying in the 48th street vicinity. Does anyone have any ideas of where to Park the car and "leave it" for a week? <BR> <BR>What is the general cost?

Not sure where you're driving in from but here's what works for me: <BR> <BR>Drive to Tarrytown NY (it's where the Tappan Zee Bridge crosses the Hudson) and go to the Metro North commuter rail station. The T-Town police dept. is located in the parking lot directly across from the station. They'll sell you non-resident parking permits for the train station parking lot. I believe it's $5 or $6 per each 24 hour period and it's free ojn weekends. The train into the ciry is $5 - $6 each way and takes only 30 minutes on the express (40 minutes on the local). This is a safe and convenenient solution - I've done it many times. If you're coming into NYC area from the south, you may be able to do this same thing at train stations in Hoboken NJ or Jersey City. I'm not sure about pricing or safety at these stations - perhaps someone else will have some exprience to share. <BR>

<BR>Why are you subjecting yourself and you car to this torture and expense? <BR> <BR>However, if you must drive into the city and leave your car for multiple days, here what we do: On the north side of West 42nd Street, half way between 9th and 10th Avenues (and exactly at the point where the exit ramps for the Lincoln Tunnel come out at 42nd St.), there is a very large, twin-towered apartment building with a six- or seven-story enclosed parking deck connecting the two towers. It offers self-parking (itself, a rare thing in Manhattan) and the rates are (I believe) $18 per day. We've never had a problem parking there, either with security or with finding a space. <BR> <BR>From this garage, you are a short walk to the 8th Avenue subway station at 42nd St., or you can get a cab to your final destination.

We were in NYC at 55th & Broadway and the hotel charged $24.00 per day to park at a garage 4 blocks from the hotel. You don't have access to the car for that price.

Parking in the city for a week is going to cost you well north of $100, at an absolute minimum. I think it will be around $160 with taxes (16%!). <BR> <BR>Two ideas -- I regularly park at the train station in Newark, NJ. There is a lot directly across the street and it is in the business area which is very safe. There is an open air lot which costs around $14 per day. From there, it is a 10 minute train ride into the city. Another idea is to park at the Port Authority bus terminal which is located immediately as you exit the Lincoln Tunnel. It too is safe these days. My guess is $18 per day.

We parked our car at the Newark Airport and took a cab into the city. The cab was about $35.00 each way, but it takes you directly to your hotel instead of dropping you off at a bus station or something (very inconvenient with luggage). If you have two or more persons, it works out fairly inexpensively per person. The cost at the Newark airport to park was about $7.00 per day.

You didn't say why you are driving to NY, but if you can, DON'T. If you must, the Newark train station idea sounds fine and is probably the closest.
