Manhattan Hotels, Marriott Marquis,whats close by?
We will be traveling to NYC in July 2001(yeah I know July hot and sticky),with a group for a dance competition. We are planning to stay for 6 days, and would like to stay at the Marriott Marquis,(site of the comp). It appears to be a nice hotel, but we wonder when it was last renovated and if the blocks surrounding it are nice and what is close by.Also any other advice on what to do with a 10 yr old boy and 12 yr old girl that they would really enjoy. PS. anyone been to the Letterman show?

It's as good a hotel as you'll find, if you like big, flashy hotels. It's near Times Square, so there's lots of (cleaned up and no longer sleazy) action in the neighborhood, any time of the day and well into the night.
Take the kids on the Statan island ferry, or even better, a harbor boat cruise. The best place to start off for these is at South Street Seaport, which they'll also enjoy.
the kids should find the Carnegie Deli, a few blocks north of the hotel, an interesting place to eat, and there'll certainly be something they like on the menu.
The top of the Empire State Building is a treat for kids and adults alike.
Kids usually have a pretty serious interest in something, so take the kids to the New York center for whatever that is. I took a 12 year old girl interested in magic to New York, and visited one of the best magic shops int he world, and had lunch at America (another good restaurant choice for kids) on a Sunday when there was a magician entertaining.
There's helicopter at the Museum of Modern Art (check if it's closed for renovations)and smart kids love the Metropolitan Museum for stuff from the olden days. If a kid is interested in photography, there's a photography gallery to vist.
BAK

Get yankee tkts & visit the stadium via
boat (there is a co,NY Waterways, that does this). Visit Ellens Stardust for dinner (53 & BWY)--theme rest., 50s, singing waitstaff; ride the Wild Thing, a fast, rock'n roll accompanied, speed boat that goes from 42nd st to are near
Statue of Liberty, Bronx Zoo & /or Central Park Zoo; rowing on Central park lake; hanging out on Sun morning near bethesda fountain; walking around Soho;
they'd love the play Blue Man Tubes or Stomp;
Bloomingdales--walk through, FAO Schwartz, of course; daughter might like walk thru Tiffany's; Chinatown side streets on a weekday--markets, stores, a meal; find out if any street fairs are happening; SONY wonder. See Timeout ny website for other good tips.

I've been to the Letterman show. It's kind of cool, the band is great, especially if they have a really good musical guest. Dave comes out on stage about 5 minutes before the show starts and banters a little with the audience, this is where he gets his audience schtick from. During the commercial breaks the band plays but he stays quite distant from the audience. All in all it was fun to see the show in action.

I'm sure your kids (and adults too) would enjoy seeing "The Lion King", which is performed at one of the theatres within walking distance of the Marriott Marquis. It's a very difficult ticket to get, so don't wait too long.
