Manhattan Hotel with best view

ok...I already posted about a 'nice hotel in Manhattan', but I thought I would start another about the view. Which hotel in Manhattan has the nicest view from your room?

Manhattan is a mass of tall buildings so most hotel rooms have little or no view.

If you want a special view - overlooking Central Park for instance - you'll need to pay big $ at one of the few luxury hotels nearby (and the views are extra $) like the Mandarin Oriental.

I believe the upper floors of the Ritz Carlton Battery Park city on the upper floors have good views in the rooms toward the Hudson/harbor.

Other than that any highrise will have some rooms with good city views - as long as you get a room on a high floor - but - you'll be looking mostly at the tops of a lot of other buildings.

But - typically one doesn;t pick a hotel room in NYC for the views - since you're so unlikley to get one (in a 25 story hotel only the top few floors - and only in certain directions - will have views).

When are you going to be in NYC and how much is your budget? And what do you want a view of?

Someone may have specific suggestions if you give us more info.

Essex House, high floor facing Central Park.

we'll be there in late July and our budget will be around $250/night.

We stayed in the city about a month ago with our kids and got a Times Square facing view at the Marriott Marquis. They are in the midst of renovating the rooms and I was pleasantly suprised at the layout.

There are plenty of hotels with views. But, do you want a view of Central Park (check the Mandarin Oriental), Times Square (several options), or NY Harbor (The Ritz Carlton downtown.)

Ditto on the Essex House if you specify a park view (costs extra)and in any case will cost more than $250. The Beekman Tower has good views of the UN and East River and you might get lucky on price - at times it will be in your range. It's a nice Art Deco hotel too.

well, we're looking for a clean comfortable hotel for around $250/night; one where we can wear shorts and a tee without offending anyone...

You'll pay dearly for a hotel room in Manhattan that has a view.

My pick would be the Mandarin Oriental but the rooms start at around $600.

The upper floors of the Carlyle have fabulous views of Central Park as do The Plaza-Athenee, The Ritz-Carlton, The Pierre, etc.

We enjoyed the view from the Doubletree Suites--Times Square and the River.

There are many hotels with wonderful views but I personally enjoyed the view from the Millenium UN Plaza. The lobby was very dated... think Studio 54. But my room was very nice.
My first trip to NYC, I stayed at the Waldorf Towers as a special guest of the hotel.
I had the most amazing room with a view from 3 directions.
