Manhattan East Suites question
 

Hi all, <BR> <BR>Great deals with this chain right now---as low as $138 a night for a studio suite. Now, is it worth it? We are considering Southgate Towers (which I noticed someone posted on earlier and got no responses...is that a bad thing?), Shelburne Murray Hill, etc...(just so you recognize the chain!--we actually aren't really sure as they all have similar attributes). We have a bunch of plans--from a game at MSG to a show to a dinners all over...so I guess that location is variable. <BR> <BR>Any advice and insight on any of the suite hotels in the chain is welcome and you are thanked ahead of time for it! <BR> <BR>Mary

The chain has a good reputation. I am most familiar with the Shelburne and prefer that hotel to the Southgate. While the Southgate is most convenient for MSG and has good transportation because Penn Station is across the street, the neighborhood is not the prettiest one to stay in. It is a very commercial area and, for lack of a better word, gritty. <BR> <BR>The Shelburne is in a much nicer location, Murray Hill, which is also a neighborhood location and not really commercial. As for getting to MSG or the threatre district, both are walkable from the Shelburne - about 20 mintues - and Grand Central is about 4 blocks away, so transportation should not be an issue. The chain also has a hotel on 39th Street, which is also good, but a little further east than the Shelburne, thus the transportation times are slightly longer. Also, there are more dining and drinking options in the immediate vicinity of the east side hotels. <BR> <BR>

I've stayed at three Manhattan East properties; the one I prefer is the one on 39th Street, and I'm sorry I can't think of the name. But all were good experiences.

It's the Dumont Plaza on E. 34th, not 39th, Street. Have you seen the website? www.mesuites.com.

Have stayed at Shelburne many times,highly recommend...Also Lydon Garden, uptown, is very nice. Can't go wrong...

Hi,, I stayed in the Dupont , E 34 and in the Lyden Gardens I believe it was E 63 rd or 64 st. I prefered this last one . Both were apartment houses turned into hotels, the Lyden beign an older building has larger studios than the Dupont. <BR> In the Lyden we had a lovely L shape studio with dark wood English styled furniture with a separate kitchen. Instead in the Dupont we got a small L studio with an integrated kitchen . THe view was great because it was in a high floor, but as I said we were much more confortable in the Lyden Gardens.

Although it's been awhile, I use to stay in these hotels whenever I visited NY on business. My favorites are the Dumont and the Lyden Gardens. The Lyden was definitely a former apartment building. With any of these, there are a variety of floor plans for each hotel. I've had rooms with separate kitchens and dining rooms while some have just one room with a kitchenette.

I've stayed at several in the past, but find that sometimes I got more space than I needed, for more money than I needed to pay at a regular hotel. <BR> <BR>For instnace, I found no need for both a bedroom and a living room, considering that I left the room early in the morning and returned late at night. And, atone place, the television was in the living room, which is a fine place for tv except when you want to watch it from bed. <BR> <BR>And I found that regular hotels were sometimes closer to stores, attractions, etc. <BR> <BR>NY has so many bargains right now that $138 may not be the best deal around. <BR> <BR>With all that said, I have no real regrets about giving them my money in the past. <BR> <BR>BAK

Hi Lois!<BR>We have just booked the Shelbourne for next August. We are a family of 2 adults and 2 teenagers. We have booked a one bedroom superior priced at $245 + taxes per night. I noticed from your posting you have stayed there a few times. Can you give me some more information etc.. what the rooms are like, the area - are there delis near by to buy food? and just anything else you can think would help.
