For a REAL old-time diner, try the Cafe Edison in the Edison Hotel (W 47th St?). Very good burgers and matzo ball soup. Had a great $5 BLT there the other night. It's in the former ballroom of the hotel, and the high ceilings still have exquisite detail. Ooh, they have great fries, too.
