Manhattan Apartment Sublet?
I've read many of the posts on apartment rental over the years, not ever thinking that I might be looking for one myself one day! But due to an upcoming renovation, I may (nothing definite) have to vacate my apartment for a few weeks this fall, and so have begun looking for a furnished place. Not easy!
I do not want to have to pay a broker's fee for a rental that would probably be less than 8 weeks. Other than to cruise the endless ads on Craigslist and VRBO, does anyone have any leads for someone in my position? Swimming pool in the building is a huge plus. Maybe a student/faculty rental? (How can I access these at NYC, Columbia, etc?) The size is not that important--studio or one-bedroom is fine. Needs to be somewhat attractive and not priced in the stratosphere. Feel free to offer suggestions/advice for coping with a renovation, too! |
The Kimberly Hotel in midtown east (50's)has been touting reduced rates for month or longer stays which includes use of a nearby health club that has a pool. Have no idea of price.
http://www.kimberlyhotel.com/bpdocum...tendedstay.pdf The Phillips Club near Lincoln Center is another idea but may be too pricey. The Trump development called Trump Place is another idea. If you don't mind the Hell's Kitchen area you could contact Executive Plaza and Worldwide Plaza to see about availabilities there. Both are condos. The fact that you're in NYC and can go and check places out will be a huge benefit. You could even try running your own ad on Craigslist. |
McClaurie, you are always so helpful! Many thanks!
I just called the Kimberly and the very nice concierge gave me the rates--a bit over $9,000 for the month. (He checked October rates) This is too pricey! But he did suggest that I call the Marriot in downtown Brooklyn, which happens to have a pool... I will investigate the 2 condos in the west 40s these are all very helpful starting points! I think any thing with Trump in the name will be out of my price range, though. It is difficult because I do not know exact dates and may not know these until just a couple of weeks before I may want to move... Let me see what turns up and I will report back. I seem to be in for quite a price shock!! Thanks again for your help, here and always! |
I don;t know if the colleges wil help - they usually have listing for rentals of at lest a semester - but you could try to see if there are any short-term faculty sublets.
And being on the spot makes Craig's list somewhat less risky - but I would run your own ad once you know the dates. You'll be able to check it yourself but do be sure to insist on seeing the original lease for the apartment (or get caught like the young woman in my office who nearly paid for a sublet to the ex-boyfriend of the actual tenant - he had a key and was getting back at her by installing a new tenant while she was on vacation.) |
i have a place on 72nd (UES) studio in perfect condition, doorman building, which i haven't thought of renting but might consider. let me know your needs and how to make contact. i will be in nyc 8/8 to show or talk further. i could not allow pets or smokers, though, or more than one person.

Suite7: I have no pets and do not smoke. But I do have a (human) partner.
We would like to have a kitchen and, hopefully, cable tv. Let me know if you would consider having two people; of so, I will give you my info. |
I would. you just may find it too small for you.
