cmcfong - it's an Associated Press article so it's been picked up everywhere. Here's a link to Google News:

All I can say is - welcome to George Bush's America. They'll let this guy in but they'll keep same-sex partners without citizenship out.

They should keep everyone without citizenship out. What should being gay exclude you from that.

Customs agents DID detain this guy. They DID confiscate his weapons.

He was questioned for two hours. During that time, US Customs agents (this is a directy quote from Bill Anthony, spokesman for US Customs) "employed every conceivable method" to check for warrants or to see if Despree had broken any laws in trying to re-enter the country.
There was no warrant against him.
He was a US citizen.

More from this official: "Nobody asked us to detain him. Being bizarre is not a reason to keep somebody out of this country or lock them up...we are governed by laws and regulations and he did not violate any regulations".

In other words, they tried their darnedest. Also, "our people don't have a crime lab up there. They can't look at a chain saw and decide if it's blood or rust or red paint."

I'm getting sick of people who want it both ways - detain the bad people, but don't you DARE detain moi!

Instead of condemning the hard working customs agents, how about we congratulate the Massachusetts 911 dispatcher who plugged in various Driver's License number (they were given a bulletin listing his DL, with one number missing) and found his most recent address, which led to his capture. Kudos to her!

ahhnold - the point was that an American citizen can marry someone who is not a citizen and they are welcomed into our country. Because the federal government is so set against homosexuality the playing field is not even.

But apparantly naturalized Canadian murderers are welcome.

The playing field is open, I can't marry a guy either. No discrimination.

We are never going to lock up our borders to the point of keeping out every person with evil intentions. Granted, we want them to be safe as possible but they will never be perfect so I'm not totally surprised that a random loon got through.

However it is not the random loon of this sort that should concern us. Those who want to do massive harm will not be clothed in such obvious warning signals. We need to be more concerned about why so many other countries and people hate us and what we might have down to arouse such hatred. Only then will we be on the path to peace.

We have had a war every 20 since the revolution. This hatred is nothing new and trying to make them "like" us is pointless. Maybe they should change their ways.

Ironic when (those who will go unmentioned) seem to dance while Rome burns.

History does repeat.

"Maybe they should change their ways."

To our way? Gee, do you suppose that attitude has anything to do with the state of the world today? Hmmm.

Snowrooster, Why do you hate Americans and support terrorists. You seem to think they are the "good guys" here.

The headline "man.....let into the US" is a bit disingenuous, since one cannot truly speak of 'letting' citizens back into their own country.

Is anyone really so deluded as to believe that the majority of murderers behave in such obviously bizarre ways? The most dangerous people aren't the kind who advertise themselves as bizarre, but those who commit horrific crimes despite having, to all outward appearances, a normal personality and/or benign intentions. The 9-11 terrorists weren't carrying chain saws or even any obvious weopon of any kind. Paul Bernardo and his subsequent wife-in-sociopathy, Karla Holmolka, carried on for so long precisely because they were the very picture of your average couple.

This is yellow journalism of the worst kind.
