Mamouth Lakes

We will be visiting the Mamouth Lakes area for a few days this fall and would appreciate recommendations for lodging and dining.

Pardon the spelling error - should be Mammoth Lakes.

We stay there for a week in the summer. We have been staying at Juniper Springs which is adjacent to the Eagle Express Chair Lift. There is also dining at their cafe called Talons which we have never tried. Drive to town is brief and the bike ride is great going down but a brute riding up hill all the way back (high altitude too)

We ususally drive to the gondola area and take the gondola up to the top just to gasp at the views. We also wake up early and get to the entrance station before 7:00 am so we can drive ourselves down to Devil's Postpile and Red's Meadow for hikes. Though we do find ourselves in the area of Mammoth Inn it's too far from town for us to want to stay there.

Since Juniper Springs is a condo we do eat in for some meals but we have been to a acouple of places:

Giovannis which is right in the shopping center with Safeway. A really popular spot, always a wait. Here's the menu http://www.mammothweb.com/eat/giovannis/

We also ate at Grumpy's which serves a ton of food. Here's the menu http://www.mammothweb.com/eat/grumpy/

Ate at Old Mammoth Grill which had good servie food and drinks. http://www.mammothweb.com/eat/oldmammoth/

The unusual thing about Mammoth is that some number of restuarants are coming and going all the time. It must be hard to make a living at it there.

Have a great time. Fall is beautiful in the eastern Sierras.

We prefer to stay in the lake areas rather than in town (for late spring, summer, early fall). You didn't say exactly when in the fall you're planning to visit. There are cabin rentals though most of them are only open through the end of September/early October. We've stayed at Crystal Crag lodge which is across the road from Lake Mary. Tamarack lodge across from Twin Lakes is open year round I believe. The road past Twin Lakes closes seasonally. The only drawback is you'll have to drive to town for restaurants, etc. (Tamarack lodge does have a restaurant which is supposed to be pretty good but I've never eaten there) but it's quieter, more peaceful to me.
