Mammoth Caves and what else

We are flying into Nashville Thursday night before Labor Day weekend. We want to visit Mammoth Caves in Kentucky. Besides visiting Mammoth Nat'l Park are there any suggestions for things to do and places to see. Our flight leaves Monday morning. Also I need some tips on where to stay while visiting the park.

Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, KY.

Abraham Lincoln'd Birthplace in Hodgenville, KY.

The Hermitage in Nashville.

In Murfreesboro south of Nahsville: Stones River National Battlefield and Cannonsburgh Village.

Thanks Dusty for the info. What about Kentucky Down Under - Is that worth a stop?

We opted for a blast from the past when we visited Mammoth Cave and stayed at a "wigwam" motel. Not luxurious, but fun.
Here's a link to their website.

I've never been to Kentucky Down Under.

It's an Australian animal park or zoo.

Are you looking for things to do with young kids? If so, there are a lot of things to do just off the I-65 exit toward Mammoth Cave NP. Several campgrounds, minature golf, etc.

Mammoth Cave National Park is abundant with wildlife around sunset. Lots of deer, racoons, wild turkeys in the park. Some short hiking (or strolling) trails in the park.

If you plan on doing the cave tours make sure you have enough time built into your schedule. Tours are varing lenghts depanding on your wallet, time you have, and adventourous sprit. I think you can book them advance.

I think there is also a way to make reservations for an in depth tour. We stopped by one day en route to Louisville KY and could not take a guide lead tour b/c we were too late and the the tour was filled up. I would look into getting there early and signing up for a tour, doing ahead of time if you can. Also, take a jacket, it can get quite cold down there.

When in Louisville we went to Churchill Downs for a few races, with the kids. It was so fun, and the venue is very interesting, old south charming.

Also check out White Castle for quick bit. We are going to Nashville in Aug and am really looking forward to a few stops at White Castle. I know, I'm weird...

You're not weird. White Castle ships frozen burgers everywhere!
