Mamma Mia ok for kids?
 

I know this is isn't a cut and dry question to answer, but I'm trying to determine if Mamma Mia will be ok for my 8 & 10 year old sons. We have tickets through a business function and would love to have them see a producation in New York. We will not have the opportunity to attend another show while in town.

I'm familiar with the storyline which I think they would be ok with, but just how blantant are the sexual references?

As to the appropriateness, I can't recall anything "off" - bad for young kids. Someone else will know. I do recall that it seemed very long to me - even though I loved it. And the big payoff is the last scene that you won't want to miss -

I think it would depend on whether your kids will "get it". I first saw it when my daughter was about 9 and was glad I had not taken her. There would have been too many questions: "how could the lady not know which man was the father?" etc. Later on, when she was about 12 or 13 we saw it and the question about the dad was understood. As far as the sexual reference, she still didn't catch on. Which is OK until she is about 30 :)

I loved Mama Mia but I'm not sure that 10-year olds would enjoy it as much. I think the adults in the audience had more fun because of the references to music and their own time, but agree with MY and the other posters about the references. What about Disney? Lion King is pretty cool, and I've heard good things about The Little Mermaid also.

Saw it with my daughter when she was 11 or 12. There are several places in it that really isn't appropriate. Some of the references are blatant. I don't regret taking my daughter and she did enjoy it. You probably will have a little explaining to do somewhere. I never asked any question from my parents growing up. Our daughter has been the opposite. She is very offended by anything that is bad taste.

Thank you for all the replies. I think we will try to get a sitter at the hotel. I suppose it doesn't make much sense to keep them out for a late night at an event that's likely to not be fully appreciated at their age. Or if it is appreciated, it comes with a lot of questions for mom and dad!

It all depends on how "questioning" your kids actually are don't you think?

But I agree, having seen this show four different times and given your own assessment you'd be much better off with a sitter.
