Male travelling solo to Honolulu
My 40 yr old husband will be staying in Honolulu for 6 nights next month on his way to Canada and will be looking for things to do. He loves karaoke - any suggestions? Not sleazy places. He also loves the beach and wants to do a few touristy things incl Ala Moana Shopping Centre. He's been to Honolulu twice before but stayed mainly in the Waikiki area.
What is the best value luau? Or are luaus not worth it (especially considering he will be by himself), and are there other/cheaper ways to see this type of entertainment? Any recommendations for things to do outside of Waikiki, other beaches to visit, or nice little towns, and should he hire a car or use public transport? What is the cheapest way to visit the Polynesian Cultural Centre?
He won't be visiting other islands. He's never travelled solo before so feels a little "odd" doing things like eating in restaurants alone etc. even though I've told him he won't look silly sitting in a restaurant/cafe by himself (he's just not used to it so needs a little reassurance).
He would also like to see a few nightly shows, like SOS etc. Can you book these once you reach Honolulu, or do you have to book earlier? Thanks again for any info.

Hello Aussie, I can't specifically answer your questions regarding luaus etc. I am sure others can or his hotel can advise him. I don't know anything about karaoke. Beaches are there and a single male will be right at home so to speak. Ala Moana Shopping Centre..again that won't be a problem.
Actually nothing will be a problem Aussiegal. I have had family members (males) that have had to go to Hawaii once a month for a week at a time due to business reasons. I have had family members (again males) that have moved to Honolulu for months on end as they got transferred there through their jobs. Please tell your husband he will fit in just fine and will see a lot of men there that are on their own. There are all type of eating establishments and for sure please tell him he won't look "odd" eating by himeself, honest.

The karaoke question will depend on where he is staying. I don't know of many karaoke bars in Waikiki; that does not mean they don't exist, I just don't know of many. My friends like to go to places outside of Waikiki.....like Anyplace Lounge on King Street.

I've been to Waikiki/Honolulu solo twice and had a great time. There's lots of things in addition to the beach: Bishop Museum, Iolani Palace, ShangriLa estate, Honolulu Academy of the Arts, visiting Chinatown, etc.
I got around using only public transportation, the hotel shuttle bus from the airport, taxi back to the airport, trollies around Waikiki, and "The Bus" which is the excellent public transportation system on Oahu.

Polynesian Cultural Center has the best Polynesian entertainment in all of Hawaii.
$50 for their basic ticket that includes 'Horizons', the best Polynesian show in all of Hawaii. They do have an even cheaper ($36) ticket, but it doesn't include 'Horizons'.
$80 for the Ali'i Luau package at PCC.
Best Waikiki shows: Creation: A Polynesian Journey, John Hirikawa's Magic of Polynesia, Society of Seven (SOS). Most Waikiki shows should still be availabe when he gets to Oahu. Most Waikiki shows have coctail seating besides the dinner/show. It is the same show. You just get seated after others have eaten. Same show at about 1/2 the price.
Some good Oahu info including pub/clubs

Hilton Hawaiian Village has a free Polynesian show on Friday nights (minimum two drinks for poolside seating).
Several other free shows in Waikiki. Check the free brochures for places & schedules.
