Malasadas on Maui

Ok. I've gotten the plane tickets. I've finally figured out the lodging. Now, for the important things. Where can I get good malasadas on Maui? We'll be in Makena, but I've been known to drive many miles to get them fresh and warm, so I don't care where they are. Thanks.

The only decent ones I've found are at Home Maid bakery in Kihei. It's in the original Azeka's mall, near the post office. As a fellow malasada lover, however, I must say that nothing compares to either Leonard's or Agnes's on Oahu. This year we tried 3 places on the Big Island, including Tex's in Honokaa which are highly touted. All disappointed. (but the quest is fun!)

Thanks Barbara.

Anyone else? :@)

Ok, billy, you know your little fat friend has checked out important things like malasadas.

If you decide on Home Maid Bakery, the only place they serve them hot if at their location on Lower Main Street in Wailuku. Hot ones you can get from 5am-10am and 4pm-10pm. Now they have them in various grocery stores, one being Food Land.

Another place I have heard about is Komoko Bakery in Makawao. Oh yeah, and Simply Sweets in Kahului.

Try em all and let us know which is the best. You ever look at igougo.com?
It's worth a prowl.

I'2,

Thanks.

I knew I could count on you.

I've buzzed around igougo, but not much. I'll check it out.

iamq: Keep your eyes open for any local-kine festival/ballgame, too. The best malasadas here on Kaua`i, are the hot-n-greasy ones served up at these events. ((H))

Yes auntie! Like the tent at the Koloa Plantation Days food fest? O-)

What exactly are malasadas? I will be going to Maui next summer and I am always up for trying new foods.

They are Portuguese in origin. They are deep fried dough, something like a donut with the hole. YUMMY.

That should read, "...without the hole."

There is a Portuguese bakery near me, in Santa Clara, CA that makes malasadas. They are yummy. :-)

WHERE? =-O

Hi Bill- I know it's near Maui (LOL), but I thought I'd bring it up anyaway since we were talking malasadas. :-)

iamq Oct 1st, 2006 11:47 AM

I'm serious. I live in Palo Alto and a drive down to Santa Clara for malasadas is no big deal. Do share.

Hi Bill,

Curious where you are staying in Maui - if you don't mind sharing. I think we have similar tastes in accommodations - and I like collecting recommendations for future planning!

Thanks.
