Makena Surf and Paipu Beach

I'm still trying to book a condo in the Wailea area for September. The Makena Surf is at Paipu Beach. Is this a nice beach to bring 4 year olds to play in and swim or is it really rough?

Paipu Beach? I've never heard of it, but I looked at Maui Revealed and they say it's on Po'olenalena beach, which we loved last year in July. Lots of soft golden sand, pretty good snorkeling, and divided into big sections by lava outcroppings, which can make a nice little shady cove in places. The water was nice in July and should still be pretty calm in September, so I wouldn't worry, but you always have to assess it for yourself. All in all though, it was a beautiful beach we really enjoyed.

Dear Turn_it-on: Thank you for checking Maui Revealed.

Paipu Beach is not a baby beach. It could get rough for a little one. It is a favorite for boogie boarding and bodysurfing. September is still summer which means we could still get a south swell, which would kick it up a notch. But it is hard to predict in advance. The south beaches have ben flat this past week, but it is hurricane season and a storm to the south will kick up a nice swell. If it gets rough, pack up and try another beach. Baby Beach in Lahaina, while a drive, will always be your best bet. You must go at least once with your keiki.

There is also quite a bit of Kiawe at Paipu. Best to wear our slippers.

That would be YOUR slippers. I'll wear mine, you should wear yours!

Maui Revealed, I recall, rates Po'olenalena as among the best beaches for snorkeling, and it is exceptional. However, the surf can get extremely rough there. My older children didn't attempt to enter the water in November, and they're all very good swimmers. Best to check it out when you're there.
