Makaha, HI
 

Planning our annual trip to the islands in April. We are looking at renting a condo in the Makaha area. In all of our trips, we have never spent any time at Makaha. Does anyone know anything about restaurants, activities, etc. We will be there for 8 nights.

Makaha is kind of out in a remote area. Lots of homeless camps on the beaches.

If I was to stay outside of Waikiki it would be in Kailua area or North Shore.

If you want to stay on Leeward (west) side, then try to find something closer like Kapolei or Ko'Olina.

There are some decent boat tours out of Wai'anae. Ka'ena Point is a nice hike, but leave no valuables in your car.

Makaha is WAY out from most everything the typical visitor to Honolulu wants to see/do.

Unless you plan to eat in and stay in the vicinity of the condo, I would never recommend anyone staying out there.

The drive time into Honolulu in non-rush hour traffic is at least 45 minutes. In traffic - don't even consider it.

you are talking about makaha resort and golf or a condo on the beach?

westside is a low income and nanakuli/waianae beaches is homeless capital.

but if you’re talking about makaha resort and golf, that’s different. i recommend this place.

not a resort per se, except that it tailors to golfers.

Ditto the poster that asks you to specify where in Makaha you are planning to stay.

The area itself is interesting. As many have pointed out, the main drag and some of the communities to Makaha....well, let's say they have their challanges. However, way up in Makaha VALLEY itself, there are million dollar homes all over the place.

In general though, it is very out of the way with very little in the way of fine dining in the area. Also, don't plan on walking around the area at night. Not very safe.
