nanabee, I wrote a different version of my trip report for the Chesapeake sailing magazine Spinsheet (which also published several photos).

I'm glad you enjoyed your trip to our state and the photos are lovely. However, after living here over 30 years I have never heard the term "touron". The old expressions, with appropriate accent, is "folks from away" or "not from around he-ah".

Hi, cyndij and thank you. I've never heard the term 'touron' either but I'm taking this report with a grain of salt. It is surprising that the OP missed both Southwest Food Mart or Hannaford's in Bar Harbor. Sorry but 'We just didn't investigate it' shouldn't translate into 'there just aren't any...'. There are also many local restaurants within walking distance of the harbors on Mount Desert. Planning ahead would have addressed the provisioning and restaurant issues. *Somes* Sound is lovely and the photos are pretty. It is great to be out on the water.

You're absolutely right, bassharborbaby, I may have been a bit conclusory about supermarkets and restaurants. I should have limited my observations to my own particular experiences. And those are the experiences of someone visiting for a very short time by sailboat, whose itinerary is governed by the weather, and who was also visiting just prior to what we're told is the "season." Land visitors, or sailors with a lot more time, might find a lot more than we did. Alas, the cruising guides we used didn't tell us a whole lot.

As for the term "touron," I didn't make it up. Our taxi driver (who was "from away" but has lived on Mt. Desert Island for decades)
used it, and claimed it's a term used by residents.

And I realize I spelled "Somes" Sound wrong (though several of the resources I used spelled it "Soames," the preponderance spell it "Somes). I've already been taken to task by DH on that one.

Sorry, I wasn't implying that you made it up, just that I hadn't heard it before! And also to add to the discussion, the major towns on MDI are not that remote and really do have excellent restaurants and regular grocery stores. I didn't think you implied otherwise, but I just wanted to second the clarification for folks who might be thinking they are really remote. In fact, the area is much too busy for most Maine-ahs, but I also love it!
