Maine or Vermont in Spring?
 

Hi
I am travelling next week with my girlfriend to see her sister who is spending the year in Boston. We spend the first weekend in Boston and then drive up to Mount Washington an have a few days to kill before having to return to Boston and we are wondering whether to roadtrip around Vermont and then back down or go to Maine and back down the coast? Any ideas? I know it can be quite snowy but we have hired an SUV with 4wheel drive so that shouldn't be an issue. Open to suggestions.....

i heard a weather report today saying it may be up around 70 degrees next week. so not good for skiers but maybe for your road trip. Even with an SUV I would stay off the dirt roads which are likely to have bad mud.

It is a good time to see maple sugaring. Not sure what else you are interested in?

Have either of you seen Cape Cod? Doesn't the sister have any good suggestions?

Up the coast isn't particularly scenic until you get off the main road and head out to the points and peninsulas. Many of the coastal towns are quite sleepy this time of year.

She has only just moved there, and lives about 30 mins south of Boston. We are going to CapeCod and P'town on the second weekend so it is just working out which state to drive back through... I am not sure I got a clear answer from any of you?! Maybe there are some really cool towns or cities that we should go and visit?

Portland Maine is a great place to visit. You can take a foodie tour. The Old Port Area is a wonderful place to shop interesting stores. You can even take a cruise of the harbor. The mail boat runs year round but there's also other cruises.

If you stayed in Portland you could explore beaches to the south (not sure what walking conditions are on Marginal Way in Ogunquit) and have a great meal at night back in Portland. Rockland is about 2 hours north. Visit Farnsworth Museum for art. If weather is good take the short easy hike out to Owl's Head Light.
