Maine-new england states

We would like to visit the New ENgland States at the time of year that all the leaves are changing color. We would like to take a two week driving trip through the states.
any suggestions as to best time of year and places to stay?
We live on the west coast and would fly into an airport closest to the start of a driving trip.

The best time to go is the last week of September - first week of October. "Peak" varies from year to year, but those two weeks are nearly always splendid. It's not too early to start booking accomodations for the best selection. I think the best scenery and most thrilling drives are in the White Mountains of New Hampshire (nice towns include Jackson on the east and Franconia on the west, as well as Bretton Woods in the middle) and the Green Mountains of Vermont. There are too many beautiful small towns in the Green Mountains to mention. You may want to call the tourist office for each state and request literature. Also useful is Frommer's Best Loved Driving Tours of New England. Another fine destination is the Berkshires in Western Massachusetts. Convenient airports include Manchester, NH and Burlington, VT.

Are you talking about this year or next year. I spoke with a friend on Saturday who lives in Nashua, NH and she told me the leaves have barely started to change as of now. Looks like the lack of rain has done something to delay the leaves changing. I live on the Eastern Seaboard and only a few trees have started to change.

I live in Nashua and drive 25 miles northwest to work. The foliage along the way today was positively spectacular (and quite a change from Friday).

Talked with my friend last night and she said the same. I'm going up in a week and a half, and that's half the reason I'm going. In three days I've noticed the Maples are changing here also. The temperature at night has been dipping into the 30's for the last week, I think that has alot to do with it.
