Maine in May
Planning a driving trip from Cleveland to Maine .Been to new England, but never Maine. With limited time ,where to visit as the must see areas of this state .Love staying in B&B s ,Inns. Love the beach ,history,and art . Any thoughts,much appreciated.

The weather could be anything from snow to 90's and that might be on the same day. Do prepare for anything.
For New England, Maine is a large diverse state. The southern coast has some nice beaches, but the water temperature will freeze you instantly on entering (it's even cold in August). To see the coast you really need to get off the hwy and drive down some of the peninsulas that line the coast. Acadia NP is wonderful. I would head there. Portland is the largest city and has a lot to offer. There are nice mountains for skiing, but that will probably be over with by May. Do you think May is not the best time of year to visit? Any other ideas on New England? Maine only state in that area have not been to. Also love the old southern cities. Driving time is a big concern.

May is not the best time to visit because some things won't be open, it is foggy and cool on the coast, and it may well be buggy inland.
On the other hand, fog is romantic and you won't have to fight crowds. It depends more on your expectations than anything else. As emalloy suggests, prepare for ll weathers or be prepared to stop at LL Bean and buy shorts and t shirts or wooly sweaters and gloves! |

September right after labor day, crowds are gone, weather is usually some of the best of the year, and the staffing at restaurants is no longer a bunch of college kids who just finished their exams a week ago and haven't been properly trained yet (like the staffing in late May).

However, September tourism has doubled since some of us starting hyping it up ten years back. So lodging prices no longer drop right after Labor day like they used to.

Don't let perfect be the enemy of good. May may not be the absolute best time to visit Maine, it is far from the worst. Just spent a spectacular weekend in Kennebunkport - weather was warm enough for wonderful walks on beach with zero crowds. Granted, nobody was swimming (though there were a few brave souls surfing). Depending on what you like to do, weather may not be a huge factor.

thanks.can you pin point which area for a first time visitor . B&B, INNS, no chain hotels. Im an artist looking for beautiful sights and relaxation.

One of the many reasons Maine is so amazing is the weather. Artists have painted the many moods of Maine for centuries; most of them are not sunny beachy weather. I think you should head for areas of Maine that aren't so touristy, Southern midcoast....Harpswell maybe. It's like going back in time, but with a couple of great towns nearby. Brunswick is close and home to Bowdoin College and Bath is close with it's maritime heritage. Honestly, does anyone really come to Maine for the weather?

Good ideas. Now planning on the month of June. Looking for 2 locations, or one central one. Would like to be by the water or close to it.
