Maine in Early May?

I'm thinking about visiting Bar Harbor and Acadia the first weekend of May. I know this is still considered the off-season, but just how "off" is it?

Will most of the restaurants and sites be open during that first weekend? I know the weather can be iffy at that time, but generally speaking, will I be able to go out and enjoy Acadia?

Or would we be better off going to a Maine destination further South such as Kennebunkport?

Thanks for any advice!

Many shops, restaurants and hotels will still be closed. But that means no crowd. Just depends on what makes you "enjoy" a place. I hate crowds, so I think off-season is great.

Thanks for the quick reply. I would definitely enjoy the lack of crowds. But I'd also like to be able to enjoy dining at some of the restaurants in the area such as Cafe This Way, Jordan Pond House, etc.

Is it going to be difficult finding a place to eat? Particularly seafood? :)

I have gone to Maine in early May, in mid-October, in mid-November, and I never had a problem finding seafood to eat. However, if you have specific restaurants you want to visit, then you need to check with them.

Hi and May *is* off-season but if you are looking for a private Park experience and friendly rates, this would be the time. You can get out on the water - the Swans Island Ferry from Bass Harbor is 365 as is the mail boat to the Cranberrys. Restaurants are open - Sips, Red Sky in Southwest, Tan Turtle in Northeast and others in Bar Harbor. Hiking is everywhere. Last year 7 am early May temp in Bass Harbor was around 41 degrees - we are 20 mins from Bar Harbor on the quiet (westerly) side of Acadia's Mount Desert. We all layer up and enjoy the weather which can change dramatically. Please remember that our active year-round population that needs to dine, shop and recreate. The pristine beauty of Acadia makes it all worthwhile. Have a great trip.
