Another post mentioned "DOT ferries to the outer islands." Is there a webiste for more information? Thank you.

Where are you going? I guess the second one is the state of Maine DOT ferry lines. I thought they would provide for more destinations. Probably, if you have a particular island you want to go to, google "ferry service to xyz island in Maine."

The Casco Bay lines routes from Portland are a wonderful way to spend a lazy day when you have been touring heavily.

These ferries are the normal means of transportation for many people who live on and commute from the islands. Your ferry will carry people, newspapers, building materials, packages, groceries, bicycles, and maybe even a car. They are fascinating trips.

One of the routes takes you all the way to Bailey's Island, where you can have a lobster lunch before returning to Portland.

Thanks, tbelgian and Ackislander. We have only made air reservations and are in the planning stages. We will fly in/out of Portland and will arrive Oct. 16 and departing Oct. 27. It appears some of the ferries will no longer be in service. So we may choose what is available at that time of the year -I'm sure it will all be fun!! Right now we plan 2/3 days in Portland; 4/5 in Bar Harbor area; the remainder is still up in the air. But any suggestions for late October is very much appreicated!! We love food, hiking, museums, special events -- okay just about everything. We live in the mountains, so the ocean is a draw to us (because it different from where we live). Thanks for your information.

Actually most of these ferries will be operating because people who live on these islands depend on the ferries for transportation to school, work, shopping and stuff like that. Some of the tourist route will have stopped, but there will still be plenty to choose from. I don't know about accomodations or restaurants on the Islands. Some will be closed, but there will be some places that rely and serve locals still open. You will have to decide where and what you want to do. I'm sure you will have Mainers here that will chip in information as needed. Good luck!
