Maine coastal camping
 

We live in the northeast but I have never been to Maine.

I am looking for recommendations for campgrounds on the coast, no further North than the Old Orchard Beach area, Portland at the absolute furthest. I have looked at many online sites but would love some recommendations from other campers.

We have a travel trailer. Our dates are at the very end of the season, which eliminates a few that close at the end of September.

DH took his Dad on a camping trip to visit relatives. They stayed at Bayley's in Scarborough but didn't like it because it was too big.

Are you sure you want to stay that far south? We loved Chewonky in Wiscasset (very quiet and small).

Thanks, dfrostnh. Chewonki looks beautiful! I sent an email to ask when they close for the season.

Bayley's looks very much like the place we go to in Va Beach every summer, big with lots so stuff going on all the time.

The only reason I don't want to go further north is to try and keep the drive under 5 hours. We're in the Albany area. Plus it takes us longer to get anywhere since we are towing.

I hope you checked the map. Wiscasset is north of Portland.

Assuming you are Albany NY area, you might not like the drive over Hogback Mountain in VT but it would be shortest distance. Depends on pulling vehicle's power and good brakes! From there, head to Keene NH and then Concord NH. It's state hwy. You'll intersect with I89 and then I93N to I393E. Then to Route 4. I've had complaints about traffic on Rt 4 in the Northwood area because of all the antique shops but we've never had a problem pulling our camper on this route. You'll go over the very pretty bridges in Dover Point area and then can connect with I95N. On your return trip, the Hilton Park next to the bridges is an easy off from a break from driving. Nice place to have lunch.

Dfrost, we go over Hogback when we visit my sister (who moved from Northwood to Concord). I think we will most likely go across I90, for less braking, We'll save the mountain for our next car trip. Thank you for your suggestions!

Are you looking to be right on the ocean? Anything particular you would like to be near?
