Maine: a first visit/Eggemoggin Reach locale
 

I've been following another Maine thread (replies there very informative). This is our first visit to Maine (late August - the worst time for traffic).
My husband and I live in the Phila. PA area and the drive to Eggemoggin will take approx. 12 hours. Airfare to Bangor not cost effective. We could fly to Boston, rent a car and head north (or just drive from home). Our plan is to spend a week at Eggemoggin Reach and explore Acadia (an hour away), Camden and other areas. Would appreciate feedback if flying will eliminate the 'worst' of I-95 (we realize Boston has the 'dig'). Does anyone know driving distance Boston to Eggemoggin/Brooksville? We have a few days on each side of our one week Eggemoggin stay to spend a night or two 'coming/going'. Appreciate all replies. Thanks!

Is there some reason you can't fly into Portland? I think the drive to Eggermoggin might take 2 hours or less from there on the coast hwy and then over.

Look into airfares to Manchester, NH (MHT) as well. Much easier to get in/out of than Logan.

If you fly into MHT you will also avoid the Rt95 toll booth backup south of Portsmouth NH. Manchester Airport is very close to Rt 101 which would be your route to Portsmouth NH and Rt 95 north. The cost of a rental car at MHT might be cheaper than Logan. MHT is a much smaller airport and easier to navigate.

Thanks for all the good flight advice. We will fly into Portland; drive to our destination should take 3 hours. Has anyone stayed at Eggemoggin Reach?

We've stayed in Stonington, on Deer Ilse, so have passed through Brooksville. The area is very quiet and peaceful.

Just so you know, the route to Acadia is going to be slow. Narrow road, often lots of traffic. For a really peaceful hike, take the mailboat from Stonington to Ilse au Haut (part of Acadia).

No..but did stay at the Keeper's House on Isle au Haut. I think the mailboat idea to the isle is a good suggestion. Acadia includes this isle. Stonington is a sweet place to wander about. We also picked up some Deer Isle pepper jelly while exploring the reach area. Just go for a tasting..you'll see it written about on the isle(it's part of someone's home to my memory). As suggested in the other thread..Get yoursleves a copy of "Maine: An Explorer's Guide". There is a new edition coming out in May apparently. We've used various editions over the years for three trips to the Maine coast. Check out the Blue Hill area as well for a day trip.

Previous suggestions are appreciated! We purchased the updated 2003 edition "Maine: An Explorers Guide". Many thanks for mentioning this publication. Would appreciate hearing from anyone who stayed at Eggemoggin Reach B&B.
