Main Steet or Stratosphere Las Vegas

We are going to Las Vegas in September with friends. We are considering staying at Main Street Station Downtown or the Stratosphere or Sam's Town. We'll have a car so the distance doesn't matter. Has anyone stayed at any of these? We would love your feedback!

You are in for a treat in Las Vegas. We are returning again this April. Don't stay downtown. You must stay on the strip and spend one evening downtown. Otherwise you will miss all the great places. There are two concentrations of casinos at each end of the strip with many in between. We are again staying at the Monte Carlo. It's beautiful, new, fancy and reasonable. Also centrally located with the MGM, Excaliber, New York, Luxor on the same block area. You can take the monorail down to the group, Mirage, Caesars, Hilton, Treasure Island, etc. The Stratoshere if further down in an isolated area. Because of traffic and parking the car is not valuable. You will want to take those evening strolls from casino to casino. Grab a cab if you have a specific destination. Parking will be a headache. It's nice to be pampered and delivered right out front. You will spend valuable time trying to dodge traffic and park. Forget it!
Hit the shows too. We loved the Lance Burton magic show at the Monte Carlo. Great for $35. Also, hit all the free shows too. Watch the outdoor pirate show at Treasure Island in the evening. Go to Caesars Statues on the hour. Ask around and someone will guide you there. We are going to the new Star trek at Hilton. Hope this helps!!

I've stayed at both hotels and they are both good. I suggest having the car because taking a cab from place to place will surely add up! Parking is free at most every hotel. I do like the downtown hotel because it seems to be more personable. Everything there is also a little cheaper (food, drinks (if you're not gambling), and even minimum $ bets). You can play $2 or $5 minimum black jack tables in the downtown casinos, but you'll only find a $10 minimum at the casinos on the strip. The rooms at the Main Street have all been renovated and refurbished so they are nice and clean. I basically like to go to the strip just to see the different hotel and their attractions, but not to gamble. Do see the show "Mystere" at the Treasure Island hotel...it is unbelievable and worth every cent! Also, a trip up the Stratosphere tower is very nice at sunset! My favorite hotel (theme-wise) would definitely have to be Caesar's. The designs and statues are just beautiful! Have fun. Also, the weather in Vegas is already warm, so leave the sweaters at home.

Right now all the Station casinos (Main Street, Sunset, Palace, Boulder, etc.) are running a $29 special. However, I agree you should stay on the strip if it's your first time. We can usually get a $59 rate at Monte Carlo and it's lovely. You can make do without a car but I would highly recommend one - the parking is free everywhere (tip $1) and you save alot of time not counting on cabs and busses. You can still walk the Strip when you feel like it. And a car rental is about $20 per day. Have fun - you'll love it!

four words: stay on the strip !!!!!!
The Stratospher is nice a but there is a reason it was in bankruptcy. Sam's Town and the station hotel are all having specials but there is a reason for that...location....staying downtown is ok but how many times do you want to see a row of jet planes fly down the lite roof of Fremont street.
Stay where the action is and you will not be disappointed. I would suggest the original corner of Flamingo, Ceasar, Harrah's or Bally's because you can go either north or south to the other exciting points quickly and if you want by foot or free monorail (at least from Bally's to MGM). As for the car...forget it...you will spend more time in traffic during the nights then exploring the weird uniqueness of the strip.
