mai tai & lava flow recipie

I just got back form Hawaii and am having mai tai withdrawl. Does anyone have a recipe for mai tais and lave flows?

I went through the same thing last summer when I got back from Hawaii. So, I called and spoke to a bartender at Duke's on Waikiki - he shared the lava flow recipe with me. In the bottom of the glass add a couple tablespoons (to your liking) of pureed strawberries. Then blend with crushed ice - rum (we use Malibu coconut rum) -use a shot or two or .... - to your liking - for each glass you're making, then add about a cup for each glass of Coco Lopez and blend. Pour slowly into glass and ENJOY!! The Malibu rum adds even more coconut flavor and these were just what we needed to make it through those HOT summer nights here in Las Vegas. If you can't find Coco Lopez you can use Pina Colada mix but then you'll have a pineapple flavor added to it. We buy the Coco Lopez in the BIG can at the local liquor store, but they have small cans too for the more timid...

mmm....try this one. It's a bit complicated, but worth it! Great for parties, but it has a lot of rum, so be forewarned!

Mai Tai
(From the Mai Tai Bar, Royal Hawaiian Hotel)

5 ounces Mai Tai Mix (see recipe below)
1 ounce white rum
1 ounce Meyers dark rum

Fill mai tai glass with ice. Add Mai Tai Mix, white rum and float dark rum on top.



Mai Tai Mix
(From the Mai Tai Bar, Royal Hawaiian Hotel)

10 ounces orange juice
4 ounces orange curacao
2 ounces orgeat syrup
2 ounces rock candy syrup
2 ounces sour lemon

Combine all ingredients and add water to make 1 quart.

I have found that pineapple juice over ice with dark rum floated on top is close enough to a mai tai and easier to make!

The only fruit juice found in a real mai tai is the juice of a fresh lime. Any mai tai that includes orange, pineapple, lilikoi or other fruit juices is a poor imitation, once you've had the original.

The original mai tai, as created By Trader Vic Bergeron, contains light rum, golf rum, juice from half a fresh lime, a few dashes of orange curaçao, a splash of orgeat and some simple syrup. Shake and serve over shaved ice. Topped with dark rum.

There is big difference between the real thing and the fruity ones you find at $2.50 happy hours.

What is golf rum?
Never heard of it.

I really like the pinepple flavor of a mai tai. I'm not saying the original lime juice version isn't excellent but the pineapple flavor helps bring back the smells and flavors of Hawaii!

That's what happend when I try to talk on the phone, feed the popoki-cat and type a response at the same time.

Also, go to webtender.com for drink recipes. I got my niece hooked on virgin lava flows!

I used to work at the Waikiki Beach Marriott and one of the bartenders told me they had the best mai tais in town--something about the fresh ingredients. It is possibly an imitation of the original, but it does taste nice!

Thanks for the giggles I got reading these messages. Kaymit, sounds like how my husband and I felt after a month in Italy, we couldn't rent enough movies filmed there while drinking Chianti and Pinot Grigio. We leave for Maui (first time visit) in three weeks and I can't wait for those Mai Tais and Lava Flows!!! Mahalo & aloha!!!

bashfulLV: Are you serious about the 1 cup of cocolopez per drink?? sounds like an awful lot? (I'm just picturing that stuff stuck to my arteries):). OSB.

This is a great thread that brings back wonderful memories of my first trip to HI 35 years ago! My DH was on R&R ( belated honeymoon) from Vietnam and we drank mai tais all the time we were there.! Just adored them. Never had them state side...I think they taste best in HI ;-)
