Madison WI activities and restaurants
17 y.o DD and I are going to visit U Wisconsin, Madison in a couple of weeks. Besides touring the campus anything else we should see or do to give her a flavor of the area? We only really have half a day.

The musts:
You'll need to walk down State Street to the State Capitol and stop in at some of the quirky shops. Visit the Memorial Union Terrace. If you are lucky enough to be traveling during the NCAA basketball tourney you can watch the Badger's game from any number of places with a huge contingent of cheering students. Oh.....and hope and pray for good weather. |
I agree with mdwest's suggestions.
While in the Union, have a Babcock ice cream cone. The Nitty Gritty and Dotty Dumpling's are popular with students. We've had good meals at several ethnic places along State St. |
Ditto regarding the Union Terrace, which is amazing (on the lake), maybe have some fried cheese curds prior to the ice cream!
Here's my quick report from last summer (from another thread): We really liked Madison. Our timing/planning wasn't ideal so we missed the MMoCA, but we walked to picnic point, enjoyed the campus/union, had icecream at the location on campus, toured the capital, and really liked the walkability of the city and State Street. We visited the geology museum on campus and wouldn't particularly recommend it to others, unless they are die hard rock fans. We enjoyed Pizza at Ian's and had ok (but not stunning) meals at the Old Fashioned and the Great Dane. Went to the Dells via hwy 12 and Devil's lake. Awesome park. We hiked the balancing rock and went over to see the Devil's Doorway and down another trail. It was a very nice hike. Ate at the Farmhouse restaurant on the way to the park. Very pleasantly surprised! |
This is getting me excited. DD got into Wisconsin and it sounds like a lovely school - going on April 5
