Mackinac Island, MI

I've heard this is just for honeymooners. Anyone been? What week/month is best for fall colours? Will I feel out of place going alone if it is really for "honeymooners"?

No way, not just for honeymooners. We went there 2 Octobers ago and absolutely loved it-we were there on the last weekend they were open, stayed at the Iroquois Hotel in a $275 per night room for $75. The colors were gorgeous, but it was chilly. We had the place to ourselves, but I've heard that normally there are lots of families there. Try Michigan.org for good deals.

Haven't been for fall color, but we went once for the lilac festival in June. It was absolutely beautiful and was jammed with all kinds of people, not just honeymooners.

We were pushing my 88-year-old mother in a wheelchair, and a man about 50 asked her for a lick of her ice cream cone. She readily held it out to him, and he fell apart laughing.

Where in the world did you hear this was just for honeymooners? I don't think you would want to spend more than 2 days on Mackinac, but we loved it! We got a good price at: http://www.chippewahotel.com/special.phtml which is right on the water. We rode bikes around the Island and toured via carriage and walked. We have been married 42 yrs and did not feel the least bit not welcomed!

Thank you everyone. Sounds great. I'll look up the websites mentioned as well.

Mackinac Island is for everyone and is beautiful any time of year. After Labor Day the crowds thin out and by the first of October many of the businesses are closed for the season. That only makes it easier to enjoy the beauty of the island (without wall to wall people and bikes). A couple of hotels remain open year round, as well as a few restaurants; Doud's store has the usual grocery stuff plus a new counter with sandwiches, pizza, specialty coffees, ice cream, etc. I've been on the island at different times of the year, but fall is especially nice.
